JLPT N4

〜てくる/〜ていく(移動)

てくる/ていく

go and come back / do and go (direction of movement)

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

〜てくる and 〜ていく add a direction of movement to an action. くる means the movement is toward the place where the speaker is (or will be); いく means it is away from that place. 買ってきます means 'I'll go, buy it and come back', and 食べていきます means 'I'll eat (here) and then go'. With verbs such as 歩く, 走る, 持つ and 連れる, the pattern shows how, or with what, someone comes or goes.

§1Structure

Verb て-form + くる / いく. くる and いく conjugate as usual: 〜てきます, 〜てきました, 〜てこない, 〜ていきます, 〜ていきました, 〜ていかない. Main uses: (1) do something and come (back) here: 買ってきます, 行ってきます; (2) do something and then go: 食べていきます; (3) how or with what you move: 歩いていく, 走ってくる, 持っていく, 持ってくる, 連れていく, 連れてくる. In this use くる and いく are usually written in hiragana.

§2Examples

§3Common mistakes

  • Choosing くる / いく from the wrong point of view. くる is movement toward the place where the speaker is or will be; いく is movement away. In the classroom, talking about tomorrow's class in the same room: ✕ あした、辞書を持っていきます → あした、辞書を持ってきます. At home, talking about tomorrow's class: 学校に辞書を持っていきます.
  • Using 持っていく / 持ってくる for people. 持つ is for things you carry. For people and animals, use 連れていく / 連れてくる: ✕ 妹をパーティーに持っていきます → 妹をパーティーに連れていきます.
  • Joining くる / いく to the wrong form: ✕ 買いてきます / ✕ 買うきます → 買ってきます. Also note the past of ていく: 持っていきました, 持っていった (✕ 持っていきた).

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜に行く / 来る / 帰る (go, come or return in order to do)
ます-stem + に行く gives the purpose of going, and says nothing about coming back: パンを買いに行きます (I'm going out to buy bread). て-form + くる follows the order of events, 'buy, then come', so it includes coming back to where you are now: パンを買ってきます (I'll go and buy bread, and come back). When you leave the office for a short errand, 〜てきます is the natural choice.
〜てくる / 〜ていく (gradual change over time)
The form is the same, and the verb decides the meaning. With actions and movement verbs, くる / いく show movement in space: 子どもが走ってきました (A child came running). With verbs of change such as 増える, 減る and なる, they show a change moving through time: 子どもの数が減ってきました (The number of children has been going down).

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N4 grammar questions, the choices are often きます / いきます / います / あります after the same て-form. Decide where the speaker is and which way the movement goes: coming back to 'here' → てくる; leaving 'here' after the action → ていく. Set phrases appear again and again: 行ってきます, 買ってきます, 持ってきてください, 連れていってください, 食べていきませんか. In listening, 〜てきて (ください) is a request to go, do something and come back, so the speaker stays where he or she is.
