JLPT N4

〜てくる/〜ていく(変化)

てくる/ていく

has come to / will go on (gradual change over time)

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

Here くる and いく show movement in time, not in space. The speaker stands at 'now'. 〜てきた looks back: a change started in the past and has come up to the present (寒くなってきました = it has been getting colder). 〜ていく looks forward: a change will go on from the present into the future (寒くなっていきます = it will go on getting colder). 〜てきた can also show that something has just started to appear, as in 雨が降ってきた (It has started to rain).

§1Structure

Verb て-form + くる / いく, mainly with verbs of change: 増える, 減る, 変わる, 上がる, 下がる, 慣れる, 太る, and い-adjective 〜く / な-adjective・noun 〜に + なる (寒くなってくる, 元気になってくる). 〜てきた / 〜てきました: a change that has continued up to now. 〜ていく / 〜ていきます: a change that continues from now on. With actions that continue, the same pattern means 'have been doing until now' / 'will keep doing from now': 続けてきた, 続けていく. くる and いく are usually written in hiragana.

§3Common mistakes

  • Using 〜ていきました for a change that has reached the present. For a change from the past up to now, use 〜てきました: ✕ 最近、暑くなっていきました → 最近、暑くなってきました. Use 〜ていく for the direction from now into the future: これから、もっと暑くなっていきます.
  • Making the adjective part wrongly: ✕ 寒いになってきました / ✕ 元気くなってきました → 寒くなってきました / 元気になってきました. An い-adjective changes い to く before なる; a な-adjective or noun takes に.
  • Reading every 〜てきました as a gradual change. With an action verb it usually means 'did it and came': 昼ご飯を食べてきました is 'I ate lunch before coming here', not 'I have gradually come to eat lunch'. The change meaning appears with verbs of change such as 増える, 減る, なる and 慣れる.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜くなる / 〜になる (become)
〜なりました reports the result of a change as one finished event: 日本語が上手になりました (My Japanese became good). 〜なってきました shows the change as a process that has been moving little by little and may still be going on: 日本語が上手になってきました (My Japanese has been getting better). Words such as だんだん, 少しずつ and 最近 go well with 〜てきました.
〜てくる / 〜ていく (direction of movement)
With actions and movement verbs, くる / いく show real movement toward or away from the speaker: 友だちがケーキを買ってきました (My friend bought a cake and came). With verbs of change, nothing moves in space; the change moves through time toward 'now' or away from 'now': ケーキの値段が上がってきました (The price of cakes has been going up).

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N4 (and N3) grammar questions, てきました and ていきます appear together as choices after a verb of change. Time words decide the answer: 最近, このごろ, 〜年前から and だんだん with a past ending point to 〜てきました; これから, 今後 and 将来 point to 〜ていきます / 〜ていくでしょう. In reading passages about society (population, prices, the number of tourists), these forms show whether the writer is describing the trend so far or predicting the future. The set phrase 雨が降ってきた (it has started to rain) is common in listening.
