まだ〜ていません

まだ〜ていません

have not ... yet

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

まだ〜ていません says that something has not happened or been done up to now, and the speaker expects that it will or may happen later: 'not yet'. Japanese uses the 〜ている form here, not the simple past negative, because the sentence describes the present state of 'not done'.

§1Structure

まだ + verb て-form + いません: まだ食べていません, まだ読んでいません, まだ来ていません. Plain style: まだ〜ていない; casual speech: まだ〜てない. Past (at that time, not yet): まだ〜ていませんでした. It is the full negative answer to もう〜ましたか: 「もう食べましたか。」「いいえ、まだ食べていません。」 (short answer: いいえ、まだです).

§2Examples

  • 昼ご飯はまだ食べていません。

    ひるごはんはまだたべていません。

    I haven't eaten lunch yet.

  • 「もう宿題をしましたか。」「いいえ、まだしていません。」

    「もうしゅくだいをしましたか。」「いいえ、まだしていません。」

"Have you done your homework yet?" "No, I haven't done it yet."

  • その映画はまだ見ていない。

    そのえいがはまだみていない。

I haven't seen that movie yet.

  • 田中さんはまだ来ていませんか。

    たなかさんはまだきていませんか。

    Hasn't Mr. Tanaka come yet?

  • 先週注文した荷物がまだ届いていないんですが……。

    せんしゅうちゅうもんしたにもつがまだとどいていないんですが……。

The package I ordered last week hasn't arrived yet, so ...

  • 10時でしたが、店はまだ開いていませんでした。

    じゅうじでしたが、みせはまだあいていませんでした。

It was ten o'clock, but the shop had not opened yet.

  • レポートをまだ書いていないので、今日は遊びに行けません。

    レポートをまだかいていないので、きょうはあそびにいけません。

I haven't written my report yet, so I can't go out today.

  • 「もうリンさんに連絡した?」「ううん、まだしてない。」

    「もうリンさんにれんらくした?」「ううん、まだしてない。」

"Have you contacted Linh yet?" "No, not yet."

§3Common mistakes

  • Answering 'not yet' with the past negative: 「もう昼ご飯を食べましたか。」 ✕「いいえ、まだ食べませんでした。」 → 「いいえ、まだ食べていません。」 〜ませんでした is for a period that is over (きのうは食べませんでした). 'Not yet' means the chance is still open, so use 〜ていません.
  • Using まだ〜ません for 'haven't ... yet'. まだ食べません tells the speaker's intention: 'I'm not going to eat yet'. To say that the action has not been done up to now, use まだ食べていません.
  • Saying ✕ まだ知っていません. The usual negative of 知っています is 知りません, so 'I don't know yet' is まだ知りません. In the same way, the usual way to say 'I don't understand yet' is まだわかりません.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

もう〜ました / まだ〜 (already / still, and the short answer まだです)
まだです is the short answer taught at N5, and it needs a もう〜ましたか question before it. まだ〜ていません is the full sentence, so you can also use it with no question before it: 薬はまだ飲んでいません. Be careful with まだ + positive ています, which means 'still doing': まだ読んでいます (I am still reading it) is the opposite situation from まだ読んでいません (I haven't read it yet).
〜たことがありません (have never done)
〜たことがありません talks about experience in your whole life: 富士山に登ったことがありません (I have never climbed Mt. Fuji). まだ〜ていません talks about something that is expected or planned but is not done at this point: 今日の新聞はまだ読んでいません (I haven't read today's newspaper yet). For today's newspaper, ✕ 読んだことがありません is strange.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

A classic N4 grammar question is the reply to もう〜ましたか. The choices usually include 〜ませんでした, 〜ません, 〜ていません and 〜ていました; after いいえ、まだ the answer is 〜ていません. If the reply starts with はい、もう, the answer is 〜ました. Also check whether まだ is followed by a positive or a negative: まだ降っています (it is still raining) and まだ降っていません (it hasn't started raining yet) describe opposite situations. In listening, the casual まだ〜てない is common.
