〜ています does not only mean 'is doing'. (1) With verbs that show a quick change, such as 結婚する, 知る, 持つ, 着る and かぶる, it shows the state that continues after the change: 結婚しています (is married), 持っています (has), 帽子をかぶっています (is wearing a hat). 住んでいます (lives in) is also used this way. (2) It shows a habit that is repeated over a period of time: 毎朝、走っています. (3) It tells a person's job or school: 銀行で働いています, 大学で勉強しています.
§1Structure
Verb て-form + います (結婚する → 結婚しています, 住む → 住んでいます, 知る → 知っています, 持つ → 持っています, 働く → 働いています). Negative: 〜ていません. Past: 〜ていました. Plain style: 〜ている / 〜ていない / 〜ていた. Note: the usual negative of 知っています is 知りません.

§3Common mistakes
- Using the ます-form for a present state. わたしは東京に住みます means 'I am going to live in Tokyo', and 兄は結婚します means 'My brother is going to get married'. For the present state, use 〜ています: 東京に住んでいます, 兄は結婚しています. In the same way, 'I have a car' is 車を持っています, not 車を持ちます.
- Answering 知っていますか with 知っていません. The usual negative answer is いいえ、知りません. The positive answer is はい、知っています, not はい、知ります.
- Choosing the wrong particle for the place. 住んでいます takes に: 大阪に住んでいます, not 大阪で住んでいます. 働いています and 勉強しています are actions, so they take で: 大阪で働いています, 大学で勉強しています.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- 〜ています (action in progress)
- The form is the same, and the verb and the context decide the meaning. With an action that takes time, it means 'is doing now': 今、手紙を書いています (I am writing a letter now). With a verb of quick change, it shows the state after the change: 結婚しています (is married), 知っています (knows). With words like 毎日 or 毎朝, or with a workplace, it shows a habit or a job: 毎日、日本語を勉強しています (I study Japanese every day), 銀行で働いています (works at a bank).
- 〜ました (a past event)
- 〜ました tells about an event at a point in the past: 兄は去年、結婚しました (My brother got married last year). 〜ています tells about the state now: 兄は結婚しています (My brother is married). In the same way, 先月、車を買いました tells when you bought the car, and 車を持っています says that you have one now.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
N5 questions use a small set of verbs for this meaning: 住んでいます, 結婚しています, 知っています, 持っています, 働いています, 勤めています and clothing verbs such as 着ています and かぶっています. In fill-in-the-blank questions, the wrong choices are often the ます-form (住みます, 知ります) or 知っていません, so remember the pair 知っています/知りません. Particle questions test 〜に住んでいます against 〜で働いています. In listening, people are often described by what they are wearing (めがねをかけている人, 白いシャツを着ている人), and you must find that person in the picture.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the answer that fits the blank: 「リンさんの住所を知っていますか。」「いいえ、__。」
「リンさんのじゅうしょをしっていますか。」「いいえ、__。」
2. Which sentence correctly says 'My older sister lives in Osaka now'?
3. What does this sentence usually tell us? 「父は銀行で働いています。」
「ちちはぎんこうではたらいています。」
