〜だす shows that an action or event starts suddenly or unexpectedly. It is often used with 急に and describes something the speaker sees or notices, such as rain, crying or laughing. It is usually not used for a start that the speaker plans or decides, so it does not go well with 〜ましょう, 〜てください or 〜つもりです. In some words, だす has a different meaning, 'out': 取りだす (take out), 思いだす (remember).
§1Structure
Verb ます-stem + だす (降ります → 降りだす, 泣きます → 泣きだす, 笑います → 笑いだす). The new word is a Group I verb: 〜だします / 〜だしません / 〜だしました / 〜だして / 〜だした. It is also written 〜出す. Common verbs: 降りだす, 泣きだす, 笑いだす, 走りだす, 動きだす, 鳴りだす, 怒りだす.

§3Common mistakes
- Using 〜だす for a start that you plan or suggest. With 〜ましょう, 〜てください and 〜つもりです, use 〜はじめる: ✕ 来月からダンスを習いだすつもりです → ○ 来月からダンスを習いはじめるつもりです.
- Adding だす to the て-form or the dictionary form: ✕ 泣いてだす / ✕ 泣くだす → ○ 泣きだす. Use the ます-form without ます.
- Thinking that every verb + だす means 'suddenly start'. In words such as 取りだす (take out), 思いだす (remember) and 引きだす (pull out), だす means 'out'. 名前を思いだしました means 'I remembered the name', not 'I suddenly started thinking about the name'.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- 〜はじめる (begin to do)
- Both mean that something starts, and for events such as rain both are possible. 〜はじめる is neutral: 六時ごろ、雪が降りはじめました (It began to snow at about six). 〜だす adds the feeling 'suddenly, unexpectedly': 急に雪が降りだして、びっくりしました (It suddenly started snowing, and I was surprised). For a start that the speaker decides, 〜はじめる is used: では、練習しはじめてください (Now, please start practicing).
- 〜てくる (something starts to appear)
- 〜てきた can also show that something has started: 雨が降ってきました (It has started to rain). It describes the event as coming toward the speaker, who now feels or sees it. 〜だす looks at the moment of starting itself and stresses how sudden it was: 雨が降りだしました. 〜だす is also freely used for another person's sudden action, as in 電車の中で、隣の人が急に歌いだしました (On the train, the person next to me suddenly started singing).
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
In N4 and N3 grammar questions, 〜だす is tested against 〜はじめる. Words such as 急に and とつぜん point to 〜だす, while 〜ましょう, 〜てください or a plan (〜つもりです) at the end of the sentence point to 〜はじめる. Check the connection too: only the ます-stem comes before だす. In reading passages, 泣きだす, 笑いだす and 怒りだす show a sudden change in a person's feelings.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
