JLPT N4

〜ために(目的)

ために

in order to / for (the sake of)

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

A ために B means 'do B in order to do A' or 'do B for A'. With a verb, A is a goal that you decide on yourself, such as buying something, studying abroad, or passing an exam. With a noun, it shows the goal or the person who benefits: 家族のために = for my family. A different use of ため(に) shows a cause ('because of'); that use has its own page.

§1Structure

Verb dictionary form + ために (買うために). Noun + の + ために (家族のために, 健康のために). Before a noun, use ための: 留学生のための本. The verb is an action that the person decides to do, and the person who does the action in the ために clause is the same as in the main clause. In writing, に is sometimes dropped (〜ため、).

§3Common mistakes

  • Using ために after a potential verb or a verb like わかる / 見える. ✕ 日本語が話せるために、毎日練習しています → ○ 日本語が話せるように、毎日練習しています. ために needs an action you decide to do (話すために); a state or ability takes ように.
  • Getting の wrong. A noun needs の, and a verb does not. ✕ 家族ために働きます → ○ 家族のために働きます. ✕ 働くのために日本へ来ました → ○ 働くために日本へ来ました.
  • Using the た-form for a purpose. ✕ 車を買ったために、お金をためています (when you mean 'in order to buy') → ○ 車を買うために、お金をためています. A purpose is something not yet done, so the dictionary form is used. た-form + ために shows a cause: 'because I bought ...'.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜ように (so that a state comes about)
ために follows an action that the person decides to do, and both clauses have the same subject: 旅行に行くために、休みを取りました (I took time off in order to go on a trip). ように follows something the person cannot simply decide: a potential form, a ない-form, or verbs like わかる, 見える and 治る: 旅行に行けるように、お金をためています (I am saving money so that I will be able to go on a trip). In short: 行くために (action) but 行けるように (ability), 忘れないように (not happening).
〜ため(に) (cause: because of)
The same word ため(に) can show a cause. You can tell the two apart by what comes before it and what follows. Purpose: dictionary form of an intentional action, followed by what the person does: 試験を受けるために、東京へ行きます (I will go to Tokyo in order to take the exam). Cause: た-form, 〜ている, an adjective, or a noun for an event such as 雨, 事故 or 台風, followed by a result: 台風のために、電車が止まりました (The trains stopped because of the typhoon).

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

The most common N4 question asks you to choose between ために and ように. Look at the word before the blank: dictionary form of an intentional action (買う, 行く, 医者になる) or noun + の → ために; potential form, ない-form, わかる, 見える → ように. Connection questions test 家族のために (の needed) and 買うために (no の). In sentence ordering, ための must be followed directly by a noun. In reading passages, decide from the context whether ため(に) shows a purpose or a cause.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the best form for the blank: 将来、自分の店を__ために、料理を習っています。

    しょうらい、じぶんのみせを__ために、りょうりをならっています。

  • 2. Which sentence is grammatically correct?

  • 3. In which sentence does ために show a purpose, not a cause?
