〜ついでに

ついでに

while you're at it / on the occasion of

A ついでに、B means 'while doing A, I also do B, because it is a good chance'. A is the main thing you planned to do, and B is an extra action that is easy to add because you are doing A anyway. B is something a person does on purpose, so things that just happen, like rain starting, do not come after ついでに. It is very common in requests such as 〜ついでに、〜てくれない?

駅へ行くついでに、この手紙を出してくれない?

えきへいくついでに、このてがみをだしてくれない?

Since you're going to the station, could you mail this letter for me?

Structure

Verb dictionary form + ついでに (出かけるついでに) or verb た-form + ついでに (出かけたついでに). Noun + の + ついでに (散歩のついでに, 買い物のついでに); the noun is an action such as 散歩, 買い物 or 出張. In casual speech the の is sometimes dropped (散歩ついでに). With the dictionary form, A is still going to happen or is on the way; with the た-form, A has already been done, as in 'since I was there anyway'. ついでに can also start a sentence by itself: ついでに、これもお願いします (While you're at it, could you do this too?).

Common mistakes

3
  • Putting something that just happens after ついでに. 散歩のついでに、雨が降ってきた is wrong, because rain is not an action someone chooses to add. Say 散歩している間に、雨が降ってきた or 散歩の途中で、雨が降ってきた.
  • Using ついでに for two actions done at the same time. 音楽を聞くついでに、勉強する is wrong. For 'at the same time', use ながら with the ます-stem: 音楽を聞きながら、勉強する.
  • Mixing up which action is the main one. The main plan comes before ついでに, and the extra comes after it. If you went to the bank and also bought bread, say 銀行へ行ったついでに、パンを買った. パンを買ったついでに、銀行へ行った means that buying bread was the main plan.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
ながら (while doing, at the same time)
ながら means that the same person does two actions at the same time, and it follows the ます-stem: 歩きながら電話をする (talk on the phone while walking). ついでに is about using one chance to add a second action, usually one after the other, and it follows the dictionary form, the た-form or noun + の: 駅へ行ったついでに、コンビニでお茶を買った (Since I went to the station, I bought tea at a convenience store). For two actions at the same time, ついでに cannot be used.
ために (in order to)
ために shows the main purpose of an action: お金をおろすために、銀行へ行きました (I went to the bank to take out money). ついでに shows that B is only an extra, not the reason for going: 銀行へ行ったついでに、となりの本屋に寄りました (Since I went to the bank, I also stopped by the bookstore next door). With ために, the part before ために is the purpose of the main action. With ついでに, the part before ついでに is the main action itself, and the part after it is the extra.

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar questions, ついでに is often a choice next to ながら, たびに, 最中に and とたんに. Choose it when the first half is a planned action and the main clause is an extra action or a request (〜てくれない?, 〜てきて). Wrong choices often have something that just happens in the main clause, or two actions at the same time. Check the form too: dictionary form, た-form or noun + の. In reading and listening, ついでに at the start of a sentence means 'while you're at it', and it often adds one more request.
