〜てほしい says that the speaker wants another person to do something, or wants something to happen. The person who should do the action takes に. With 〜んですが at the end, it becomes a soft request. Said directly to a teacher or a boss, 〜てほしいです sounds too direct, so use 〜ていただけませんか there.
§1Structure
(わたしは) + [person] に + verb て-form + ほしい. Negative wish ('I want you not to do'): verb ない-form + で + ほしい (行かないでほしい); 〜てほしくない is also used. ほしい changes like an い-adjective: ほしいです / ほしくないです / ほしかったです. When you wish for a situation, not a person's action, the subject takes が: 雨がやんでほしい.

§3Common mistakes
- Using 〜たい for another person's action, because English 'want' and Vietnamese 'muốn' cover both cases. With 〜たい, the person who has the wish is also the person who does the action. ✕ わたしは田中さんにパーティーに来たいです → ○ わたしは田中さんにパーティーに来てほしいです.
- Making the negative with 〜なくて. To say 'I want you not to do it', use ない-form + で: ✕ たばこを吸わなくてほしいです → ○ たばこを吸わないでほしいです.
- Saying 〜てほしいです directly to a teacher or a boss. It tells your wish too directly and can sound like an order. ✕ 先生、もう一度説明してほしいです → ○ 先生、もう一度説明していただけませんか.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- 〜たい (I want to do)
- 〜たい is for an action that the speaker wants to do: わたしは京都へ行きたいです (I want to go to Kyoto). 〜てほしい is for an action that the speaker wants another person to do: わたしは妹に京都へ行ってほしいです (I want my younger sister to go to Kyoto). Ask yourself who does the action: me → 〜たい, another person → 〜てほしい.
- 〜てください (please do)
- 〜てください is a direct request or instruction to the listener: 静かにしてください (Please be quiet). 〜てほしい only states the speaker's wish, so it can also be about a person who is not there: 隣の人に静かにしてほしいです (I want my neighbor to be quiet). When it is said to the listener, 〜てほしいんですが works as a soft, indirect request.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
In N4 grammar questions, the choices often mix 〜たい, 〜てほしい and 〜たがる. Look at the particle after the person: [person] に + て-form points to 〜てほしい. The negative 〜ないでほしい is a common trap next to the wrong form 〜なくてほしい. In reading passages, 〜てほしい shows what the writer hopes another person will do, which is often the key to questions such as 'What does the writer want?'.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the particle that fits the blank: わたしは父__たばこをやめてほしいです。
わたしはちち__たばこをやめてほしいです。
2. Which sentence correctly says 'I want you not to open this window'?
3. Choose the words that fit the blank: あしたのパーティーですが、わたしはリンさんに__。リンさんが来ると、楽しいですから。
あしたのパーティーですが、わたしはリンさんに__。リンさんがくると、たのしいですから。
