A てから B means 'after doing A, do B'. It makes the order clear: A comes first, and B happens only after A is done. It is often used for the right order of steps (手を洗ってから、食べます). It can also mean 'since', for something that has continued from the time of A: 日本へ来てから、毎日日本語を勉強しています.
§1Structure
Verb て-form + から、main clause (洗う → 洗って → 洗ってから, 食べる → 食べて → 食べてから, する → して → してから, 来る → 来て → 来てから). The verb before から is always in the て-form. The tense of the whole sentence is shown only at the end.

§3Common mistakes
- Using the た-form before から. 食べたから means 'because I ate', not 'after I ate'. For 'after', the verb must be in the て-form: ごはんを食べてから、薬を飲みます (I take the medicine after I eat).
- Making the verb before から past when the sentence is about the past. きのう、宿題をしましたてから and 宿題をしたてから are wrong. The て-form does not change; only the end of the sentence becomes past: きのう、宿題をしてから、寝ました.
- Repeating 〜てから for every step of a long list. 起きてから、顔を洗ってから、朝ごはんを食べてから、出かけます usually sounds heavy and unnatural. List the steps with 〜て、〜て, and use 〜てから once, where the order is important: 起きて、顔を洗って、朝ごはんを食べてから、出かけます.
§4How it's different from similar grammar
- 〜たあとで (after doing)
- Both mean 'after', and the forms are different: て-form + から, but た-form + あとで (食べてから / 食べたあとで). 〜たあとで simply says that B happened at some time after A: 晩ごはんを食べたあとで、散歩しました. 〜てから stresses that A comes first and then B follows: くつを脱いでから、部屋に入ってください. For the meaning 'since', 〜てから is the natural choice: 日本へ来てから、毎日忙しいです.
- 〜から (because)
- から after the て-form shows time order. から after a sentence in the plain or polite form shows a reason. 薬を飲んでから、寝ました means 'I went to bed after taking the medicine'. 薬を飲んだから、もう大丈夫です means 'I'm fine now because I took the medicine'. Look at the form just before から.
§5How this shows up on the JLPT
In the N5 grammar section, the blank is often right before から, and the choices are different forms of one verb (洗う / 洗って / 洗った / 洗います); choose the て-form when the sentence is about order. Another type gives 〜て__ and asks you to choose から among particles such as まで, より and ごろ. In sentence-building questions (★), the て-form and から stay together. In listening task questions ('What will the woman do first?'), 〜てから is a strong hint: the action before てから is done first.
§6Quick check (3 questions)
1. Choose the form that fits the blank: くつを__から、部屋に入ってください。
くつを__から、へやにはいってください。
2. Which sentence means 'After I eat dinner, I take a bath'?
3. Read the sentence. What did the speaker do first? 「電話をかけてから、友だちのうちへ行きました。」
「でんわをかけてから、ともだちのうちへいきました。」
