〜きる/〜きれる/〜きれない
きる/きれる/きれない
do completely / cannot finish
〜きる means to do something all the way to the end, so that nothing is left: 使いきる (use it all up), 読みきる (read it to the last page). 〜きれない means you cannot finish because there is too much or it is too hard: 食べきれない (too much to eat), 数えきれない (too many to count). With some verbs, 〜きる shows a very strong state: 疲れきる (be completely tired out).

Common mistakes
2
- Putting the dictionary form or the て-form before きる / きれない. ✗ 食べるきれない / ✗ 食べてきれない → ✓ 食べきれない. Use the ます-stem: 食べます → 食べ + きれない.
- Using 〜きれない when the problem is not the amount. 〜きれない means "cannot finish (because there is too much)". If you cannot eat something at all, use the potential form. ✗ 卵はアレルギーで食べきれない → ✓ 卵はアレルギーで食べられない.
How it's different from similar grammar
2
- 〜おわる (finish doing)
- 〜おわる only says that the action has ended. 〜きる says that you did all of it and nothing is left. So you can say 晩ご飯を食べおわったが、少し残した (I finished dinner but left a little), but after 全部食べきった (I ate every bit), nothing is left on the plate. 〜きる also often shows that finishing took effort.
- Potential form (can / cannot do)
- The potential form says whether you can do the action at all: 辛い料理は食べられない (I can't eat spicy food). 〜きれない says you can do the action, but not to the end, because there is too much: このピザは大きくて、一人では食べきれない (This pizza is big, and I can't eat all of it by myself).
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar-form questions, 〜きれない often appears with words that show a large amount, such as 多すぎて, たくさん or 数え. Check the ます-stem before きる. In vocabulary and reading, learn common set phrases as whole words: 数えきれない, 待ちきれない, 使いきる, 疲れきる. Do not mix up 〜きれない (too much to finish) with the potential negative 〜られない (cannot do at all).
