〜ところだった
ところだった
nearly / would have (but didn't)
With もう少しで or a たら / ば clause, 〜ところだった means that something almost happened, but in the end it did not. It is usually a bad result that the speaker escaped, so it often sounds like "That was close!" With a good result, it shows regret: もう少しで勝つところだった (we nearly won). Be careful: without these hints, 〜ところだった can also be the simple past of the N4 〜ところだ, meaning "was just about to".
もう少しで電車に遅れるところでした。
もうすこしででんしゃにおくれるところでした。
I very nearly missed the train.
Structure
Verb dictionary form + ところだった (遅れる → 遅れるところだった). Verb ない-form + ところだった (間に合わない → 間に合わないところだった). Polite: 〜ところでした. It is often used with もう少しで ("a little more and…") or after a たら / ば clause that says what did not happen (〜なかったら、〜ところだった).

- Using the た-form instead of the dictionary form. ✗ もう少しで遅刻したところだった → ✓ もう少しで遅刻するところだった. The event did not happen, so the verb before ところ stays in the dictionary form.
- Using 〜ところだ for a past near miss. ✗ 昨日、もう少しで傘をなくすところだ → ✓ 昨日、もう少しで傘をなくすところだった. For something that nearly happened in the past, ところ must be followed by だった / でした.
- Thinking that the event really happened. 遅刻するところだった means you were NOT late. If you really were late, say 遅刻してしまった.

- 〜ところだ (about to / just did)
- The N4 〜ところだ tells which point of an action you are at: 今から家を出るところだ (I am just about to leave home now). Its past form 家を出るところだった can simply mean "I was just about to leave home" at some time in the past. The "nearly (but didn't)" meaning of this page is clear when there is もう少しで or a たら / ば clause, or when the event is something bad that nobody plans, such as 遅れる or 忘れる: もう少しで降りる駅を過ぎるところだった (I nearly went past my station). Look at the words around it to decide the meaning.
- 〜そうになる (almost, came close to)
- Both can mean "almost": もう少しで転ぶところだった and 転びそうになった are both natural. 〜そうになる uses the ます-stem and describes the moment itself, so it is more natural for body reactions and feelings: 泣きそうになった (I almost cried). 〜ところだった uses the dictionary form and fits well after a たら / ば clause about what would have happened: 目覚まし時計がなかったら、寝坊するところだった (Without an alarm clock, I would have overslept).
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar-form questions, もう少しで or a clause like 〜なかったら is a strong hint that the answer is 〜るところだった. Check that the verb before ところ is in the dictionary form, not the た-form. In reading and listening, questions often ask whether something really happened; 〜ところだった means it did not.
