〜ばよかった
ばよかった
I should have / I wish I had
〜ばよかった expresses regret about the past: 'I should have done it (but I didn't)'. The negative 〜なければよかった means 'I shouldn't have done it (but I did)'. When you say 〜ばよかったのに about someone else, it sounds like 'You should have...', with sympathy or a light complaint. It is about something that is already over, so it is not used to give advice about the future.

- Putting ば after the た-form. ば attaches to the ば-form of the verb: ✗ 早く寝たばよかった → ✓ 早く寝ればよかった (or 早く寝たらよかった).
- Translating 'I shouldn't have' word for word from English. Make the verb negative, not よかった: ✗ たくさん食べればよくなかった → ✓ たくさん食べなければよかった.
- Using ばよかった as advice about the future. ばよかった is about the past; for advice, use 〜たほうがいい: ✗ 明日は早く来ればよかったです → ✓ 明日は早く来たほうがいいです.
How it's different from similar grammar

- 〜たほうがいい (you'd better)
- 〜たほうがいい gives advice for now or the future: 熱があるなら、病院に行ったほうがいいよ (If you have a fever, you'd better go to the hospital). 〜ばよかった looks back at something that is already over: 昨日のうちに病院に行けばよかった (I should have gone to the hospital yesterday). Use ほうがいい before the chance is gone, and ばよかった after it.
- 〜ば/〜たら〜のに (if only ... would have)
- 〜ばよかった names only the action you regret: 地図を持ってくればよかった (I should have brought a map). 〜ば〜のに also says what would have happened: 地図を持ってくれば、道に迷わなかったのに (If I had brought a map, I wouldn't have gotten lost). Both show regret, but ば〜のに has a second part that tells the lost result.
How this shows up on the JLPT
N3 grammar-form questions often give a situation (a failed test, a missed train) and ask you to choose 〜ばよかった, or to choose between 〜ばよかった, 〜なければよかった and 〜てよかった ('I'm glad I did'). Read the situation carefully to decide whether the speaker did the action or not. In listening, 〜ばよかったのに said to another person is often a gentle complaint.
