〜たらどうか
たらどうか
Why don't you ... / How about ...
〜たらどうか suggests an action to someone: 'How about doing ...?'. The person who does the action is the listener or another person, not the speaker. At N3 you meet the plain どうか in writing and in reported suggestions (〜たらどうかと言われた), and the short casual forms 〜たらどう? and 〜たら? in conversation. Said in a sharp tone, 〜たらどう? / 〜たらどうなの can sound like criticism: 'Why don't you just ...!'.
疲れているなら、少し休んだらどう?
つかれているなら、すこしやすんだらどう?
If you're tired, why don't you rest a little?
Structure

Common mistakes
3
- Using 〜たらどうですか to invite someone to do something together with you. It suggests an action for the listener only; for an invitation, use 〜ませんか: ✗ 一緒に映画を見たらどうですか → ✓ 一緒に映画を見ませんか.
- Attaching ら to the dictionary form. Use the た-form: ✗ 聞くらどう → ✓ 聞いたらどう; ✗ 休むたらどう → ✓ 休んだらどう.
- Using the casual forms with a boss or a customer. 〜たら? and 〜たらどう? are for friends and family; to someone above you, 〜たらいかがですか or 〜たらどうでしょうか is safer, and even these can sound like you are telling them what to do.
How it's different from similar grammar
2
- 〜たらどうですか (polite 'why don't you', N4)
- The meaning is the same; the difference is style. 〜たらどうですか is the polite spoken form you learn at N4. 〜たらどうか is the plain form: it appears in writing (〜たらどうだろうか), and inside a sentence when you report a suggestion: 先輩に、先生に相談したらどうかと言われた (My senior suggested I talk to the teacher). In casual speech, the ending is often shortened to 〜たらどう? or just 〜たら?.
- 〜たほうがいい (you'd better)
- 〜たほうがいい is stronger: the speaker thinks it is the right thing, or even necessary: 熱が高いなら、すぐ病院に行ったほうがいい (If your fever is high, you should go to the hospital right away). 〜たらどうか only offers an idea and leaves the choice to the listener: 気分を変えるために、散歩でもしてみたらどう? (How about taking a walk to change your mood?).
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar and listening, 〜たらどうか often appears inside a reported sentence (〜たらどうかと言われた / と思う), so you must understand that someone suggested the action. In grammar-form questions, choose 〜たらどう? when one person gives advice to another. In listening, watch the tone: 〜たらどうなの or a sharp 〜たら? can show that the speaker is annoyed.
