〜ことだ(助言)

ことだ

You should / the best thing is to (advice)

〜ことだ gives strong advice: 'the most important thing is to do ...'. The speaker says what the listener should (or should not) do to get a good result. Because it sounds like advice from someone with more experience, it is usually used by teachers, parents, seniors or experts, and not toward someone in a higher position.

日本語が上手になりたいなら、毎日少しずつでも話すことです。

にほんごがじょうずになりたいなら、まいにちすこしずつでもはなすことです。

If you want to get good at Japanese, the best thing is to speak it every day, even just a little.

Structure

Verb dictionary form + ことだ (寝ることだ). Verb ない-form + ことだ (無理をしないことだ). Polite: ことです. In conversation, ね or よ is often added: 〜ことですね, 〜ことだよ. It often follows a condition such as 〜たいなら, 〜たければ or 〜ためには.

Common mistakes

3
  • Using it toward a teacher or boss. 先生、少し休むことです sounds as if you are advising someone above you. To a superior, use a softer form such as 少しお休みになったほうがいいと思います.
  • Confusing it with hearsay 〜ということだ. ✗ 田中さんは来週国へ帰ることだ for 'I hear that Tanaka-san is going home next week' → ✓ 帰るということだ. Without という, this sentence ending does not report something you heard; at the end of a sentence like this, 〜ことだ gives advice.
  • Using the た-form. ✗ 早く寝たことだ → ✓ 早く寝ることだ. For advice, use the dictionary form or the ない-form.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜たほうがいい (you'd better)
たほうがいい is everyday advice that you can give to friends, and in a polite form even to people above you: 薬を飲んだほうがいいですよ (You'd better take some medicine). ことだ sounds stronger, like 'this is the key point', and usually comes from someone with more experience: 体を治したいなら、まず休むことだ (If you want to get well, the first thing is to rest).
〜べきだ (ought to)
べきだ says what is right or what is a duty in general: 約束は守るべきだ (People ought to keep their promises). ことだ is practical advice for a person who wants a certain result: 早く上手になりたければ、毎日練習することだ (If you want to improve quickly, practice every day).

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar-choice questions, look for a condition at the start such as 〜たいなら, 〜たければ or 〜ためには: they often lead to 〜ことだ at the end. Be careful not to mix it up with 〜ということだ (hearsay or meaning) and 〜ことにする (decision). In reading passages, 〜ことだ in an advice column or a message from a teacher shows the writer's main advice.
