〜ことは〜が

ことは〜が

It's true that ..., but / I did ..., but

〜ことは〜が admits that something is true, but says it is not enough or not the whole story. 読むことは読んだが means 'I did read it, but (I didn't understand it well)'. The part after が or けど gives the problem or the limit. It is useful when you agree only partly, or when the result was not as good as hoped.

昨日の宿題は、やることはやったが、自信がない。

きのうのしゅくだいは、やることはやったが、じしんがない。

I did do yesterday's homework, but I'm not confident about it.

Structure

The same word is said twice. Verb: dictionary form + ことは + the same verb (使うことは使う, 読むことは読んだ); the second verb shows the tense and politeness (行くことは行きました). The first verb can also be in the た-form: 行ったことは行った. い-adjective: 〜い + ことは + 〜い (高いことは高い). な-adjective: 〜な + ことは + 〜だ / です (便利なことは便利だ). After that comes が or けど and the 'but' part.

Common mistakes

3
  • Using two different words. ✗ 読むことは見たが → ✓ 読むことは読んだが. The word before ことは and the word after it must be the same.
  • Dropping な with a な-adjective. ✗ 静かことは静かだが / ✗ 静かだことは静かだが → ✓ 静かなことは静かだが.
  • Following it with something that is only good. ✗ 安いことは安いが、とてもおいしくて量も多い. After が, the sentence should give a problem or a limit: ✓ 安いことは安いが、量が少ない.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜けれど / 〜けど (but)
けど simply joins two facts that contrast: この靴は高いけど、かわいい (These shoes are expensive, but cute). 〜ことは〜けど first admits the first point, as if agreeing with someone, and then adds a limit: この靴はかわいいことはかわいいけど、歩きにくい (These shoes are cute, I admit, but hard to walk in).
〜ないことはない (it's not that ... can't)
〜ないことはない is about possibility: something is possible, but not easy or not wanted: 一人で運べないことはない (It's not that I can't carry it alone). 〜ことは〜が admits a fact and then gives its limit: 運ぶことは運んだが、とても疲れた (I did carry it, but I got very tired).

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 sentence-ordering questions, the same word appears twice, so place them around ことは (使うことは使う). In grammar-choice questions, the blank is often ことは, and you should check that the word before and after it is the same. In reading and listening, the part after が or けど carries the speaker's real point, so questions about 'what the speaker thinks' often point there.

Quick check (3 questions)

0 of 3 answered
  1. Choose the word that fits the blank: この本は、難しい__難しいが、とてもおもしろい。

    このほんは、むずかしい__むずかしいが、とてもおもしろい。

  2. Which sentence is correct?

  3. What does the speaker mean? その映画は見ることは見たけど、途中で寝てしまった。

    そのえいがはみることはみたけど、とちゅうでねてしまった。
