〜ないことはない/〜ないこともない
ないことはない/ないこともない
It's not that ... can't / not impossible
This pattern uses two negatives to make a weak 'yes'. 行けないことはない means 'it's not that I can't go', so 'I can go, but...'. The speaker admits that something is possible or true, but is not very positive about it, and often adds a reason or a condition after が or けど. こともない sounds a little softer than ことはない.
自転車で行けないことはないですが、バスのほうが楽ですよ。
じてんしゃでいけないことはないですが、バスのほうがらくですよ。
It's not that you can't go by bike, but the bus is easier.

Common mistakes
3
- Mixing it up with 〜ことはない (there's no need to). ✗ 急がないことはない for 'you don't need to hurry' → ✓ 急ぐことはない. 急がないことはない means 'it's not that I don't hurry'.
- Using it as a happy, strong 'yes'. 「旅行、行く?」「行けないことはない!楽しみ!」 sounds strange, because the pattern shows that the speaker is not very eager. For a real 'yes', just say 行く!楽しみ!.
- Wrong adjective forms. ✗ 高いないことはない / ✗ 好きないことはない → ✓ 高くないことはない / 好きじゃないことはない.
How it's different from similar grammar
2
- 〜ことはない (there's no need to)
- Verb dictionary form + ことはない says that something is not necessary: わざわざ来ることはない (You don't need to come all the way here). Verb ない-form + ことはない is a weak 'yes': 来られないことはない (It's not that I can't come). Check the form before ことはない: dictionary form or ない-form.
- 〜ことは〜が (it's true that ..., but)
- Both admit something with a reservation. 〜ことは〜が repeats the same word and admits a fact that already happened or is true: 読むことは読んだが、よく分からなかった (I did read it, but I didn't understand it well). 〜ないことはない usually talks about what is possible: 読めないことはないが、時間がかかる (It's not that I can't read it, but it takes time).
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar-choice questions, you may need to choose between 〜ないことはない and 〜ことはない, so check whether the verb before it is in the ない-form. Questions on meaning often ask what the speaker really means: the answer is a weak 'yes' ('possible, but...'), not 'no'. Look for が or けど after the pattern, followed by the speaker's reservation.
