〜わけではない/〜というわけではない

わけではない/というわけではない

It doesn't mean that / it's not that / not necessarily

わけではない denies a conclusion that the listener might draw from a situation. It does not deny everything; it says 'that is not the whole story' or 'not always'. It often goes with words like いつも, みんな, 全部 and 別に, and it is common when explaining your feelings or reasons: 嫌いなわけではない = it's not that I dislike it.

肉が嫌いなわけではありません。今日はあまり食べたくないだけです。

にくがきらいなわけではありません。きょうはあまりたべたくないだけです。

It's not that I dislike meat. I just don't feel like eating much today.

Structure

Plain form of verb / い-adjective + わけではない (食べるわけではない, 高いわけではない); な-adjective + な + わけではない (嫌いなわけではない); noun + というわけではない (いちばんいい店というわけではない); noun + な / である + わけではない is also possible, but というわけではない is the most common with nouns. というわけではない can also follow any plain form, including だ: 嫌いだというわけではない. Past forms can come before it (忘れたわけではない). Polite: わけではありません. Casual: わけじゃない.

Common mistakes

2
  • Mixing it up with わけがない. わけではない only denies part of an idea ('not necessarily'), but わけがない says something is impossible. To say 'It's not that I dislike fish', use 魚が嫌いなわけではない. 魚が嫌いなわけがない means 'There's no way I could dislike fish', which is a much stronger statement.
  • Putting だ or の in the wrong place. ×嫌いだわけではない and ×学生のわけではない are wrong. Say 嫌いなわけではない or 嫌いだというわけではない, and 学生というわけではない.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
わけがない (there's no way)
わけではない is a partial denial: 日本語の本が全部読めるわけではない (It's not that I can read every Japanese book; I can read some). わけがない is a complete denial based on the speaker's strong belief: こんなに難しい本が読めるわけがない (There's no way I can read such a difficult book).
とは限らない (not always, not necessarily)
Both can say 'not always' in general statements: 駅に近い部屋が住みやすいとは限らない/住みやすいわけではない (A room near the station is not always easy to live in). But とは限らない is used mostly for general facts with exceptions. When you explain your own feelings or reasons, わけではない is the natural choice: 行きたくないわけではない (It's not that I don't want to go).

How this shows up on the JLPT

In the N3 grammar section, わけではない is often a choice next to わけだ, わけがない and はずだ. Look for words like いつも, みんな, 全部 or 別に, or a following sentence that gives the real reason (〜だけだ, 〜んだ). In reading passages, questions often ask what the writer really thinks, and 〜わけではない tells you what the writer does NOT mean.
