助詞+の(〜への/〜での/〜からの/〜との)
じょし+の
Particle + の to describe a noun (への, での, からの, との)
A particle like へ, で or から normally connects a noun to a verb (友だちへ送る, 日本で生活する). To connect it to another noun instead, you add の after the particle: 友だちへの手紙 = a letter to a friend. The particle keeps its meaning (direction, place, starting point, partner, end point), so the phrase is clearer than noun + の + noun alone.
これは国の母からの手紙です。
これはくにのははからのてがみです。
This is a letter from my mother back home.
Structure
Noun + particle + の + noun: 友だちへの手紙, 日本での生活, 母からのプレゼント, 先生との約束, 駅までの道. The particles へ, で, から, と and まで take の in this way. に does not: instead of ×にの, use への (友だちへの手紙). が and を do not take の either; they simply become の (日本語を勉強する → 日本語の勉強).

Common mistakes
3
- Using にの. に cannot be followed by の: ×友だちにの手紙 is wrong. When the meaning is 'to (someone or somewhere)', use への: 友だちへの手紙.
- Leaving out の between the particle and the noun. ×日本で生活は大変です is wrong, because a particle cannot connect directly to a noun. Say 日本での生活は大変です.
- Adding の after が or を. ×日本語をの勉強 and ×雨がの音 are wrong. が and を are replaced by の: 日本語の勉強, 雨の音.
How it's different from similar grammar
1
- Noun + の + noun (without a particle)
- Plain noun + の + noun shows a loose link, so the meaning depends on the context. 母の手紙 can be a letter my mother wrote or a letter that belongs to her. Adding a particle makes the link clear: 母からの手紙 is a letter sent from my mother, and 母への手紙 is a letter I write to my mother.
How this shows up on the JLPT
In the N3 grammar section, you may have to choose between への, での, からの, にの and similar forms in a blank before a noun. Remember that にの is not used, and が and を are not followed by の. In sentence-building questions, a noun such as 手紙, 生活 or 約束 right after the blank is a sign that the particle needs の.
