〜わけにはいかない
わけにはいかない
Cannot (because of duty, manners or the situation)
わけにはいかない means that you are able to do something, but you cannot do it because of your duty, good manners, other people's feelings or the situation. It is not about ability: the speaker judges that doing it would be wrong or inappropriate. It often comes after a reason with から or ので.

I have an important exam tomorrow, so I can't take the day off.

- Using it for a lack of ability. If you simply can't do something because you don't know how or it's physically impossible, use the potential form. ×泳ぎ方を知らないので、泳ぐわけにはいきません is wrong; say 泳ぎ方を知らないので、泳げません.
- Confusing it with ないわけにはいかない, which means the opposite. 行くわけにはいかない = I can't go; 行かないわけにはいかない = I have to go. Check whether ない comes before わけ.
- Using the wrong verb form. わけにはいかない follows the dictionary form: ×休んだわけにはいかない and ×休みますわけにはいかない are wrong. Say 休むわけにはいかない.

- Negative potential form (can't)
- The negative potential form says you are not able to do something: 足をけがしたので、歩けない (I hurt my leg, so I can't walk). わけにはいかない says you are able to, but it would not be right: 会議中なので、電話に出るわけにはいかない (I'm in a meeting, so I can't answer the phone). You could answer it, but it would be rude.
- ないわけにはいかない (have to, can't not do)
- わけにはいかない after the dictionary form means you can't do it: 大切な会議だから、遅れるわけにはいかない (It's an important meeting, so I can't be late). After the ない-form, it means you have to do it: 部長に頼まれたから、手伝わないわけにはいかない (The manager asked me, so I have to help).
How this shows up on the JLPT
In the N3 grammar section, you may need to choose the right form (わけにはいかない, not わけではいかない or ことにはいかない) or tell it apart from ないわけにはいかない. In sentence-building questions, わけ, には and いかない usually go in that order at the end. In reading and listening, it often explains why someone refused or could not do something because of their duty or relationships.
