〜べきだ/〜べきではない

べきだ/べきではない

Should / should not (what is right to do)

べきだ gives the speaker's strong opinion about what is right or proper to do, based on common sense, morals or the role of a person. It is stronger than 〜たほうがいい and can sound like a lecture when used directly to someone. べきだった looks back with regret: 'I should have done it (but I didn't)'.

学生はもっと本を読むべきだ。

がくせいはもっとほんをよむべきだ。

Students should read more books.

Structure

Verb dictionary form + べきだ (読むべきだ). する becomes するべきだ or すべきだ. Negative: dictionary form + べきではない (言うべきではない); the usual negative is べきではない, not 〜ないべきだ. Past: べきだった (should have), べきではなかった (should not have). Before a noun: べき + noun (知っておくべきルール). Polite: べきです / べきではありません. Casual negative: べきじゃない.

Common mistakes

3
  • Making the negative with ない. The usual way to say 'should not' is べきではない: say 行くべきではない. 行かないべきだ is not normally used.
  • Using the wrong verb form before べき. べき follows the dictionary form: ×行きますべきです and ×しべきだ are wrong. Say 行くべきです, and for する say するべきだ or すべきだ.
  • Using べきだ for a guess, because both べきだ and はずだ can be translated as 'should'. When you mean 'it will probably rain tomorrow', use はずだ or だろう: 明日は雨が降るはずだ, not ×明日は雨が降るべきだ. べきだ is only about what is right to do.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
たほうがいい (had better, advice)
たほうがいい is friendly advice for the listener's own good: 熱があるなら、休んだほうがいいよ (If you have a fever, you'd better rest). べきだ states what the speaker thinks is right in general, and it sounds stronger: 人との約束は守るべきだ (Promises to others should be kept). For everyday advice to friends, たほうがいい usually sounds more natural.
なければならない (must)
なければならない is used for rules and things that are necessary: 日本で車を運転するには、免許を取らなければならない (To drive a car in Japan, you must get a license). べきだ is the speaker's opinion about what is right: 運転する人は、もっと安全に気をつけるべきだ (Drivers should pay more attention to safety).

How this shows up on the JLPT

In the N3 grammar section, べきだ is often tested on its form: the verb before it (dictionary form, すべき), and the negative べきではない. It also appears next to はずだ and ほうがいい, so decide whether the sentence is about what is right (べき), a logical expectation (はず) or friendly advice (ほうがいい). In reading passages, 〜べきだ often states the writer's opinion, which is a common target of questions.
