〜に違いない
にちがいない
Must be / there is no doubt that
に違いない shows that the speaker is almost completely sure about something, often because of something they see or know. It is a judgment or conclusion about a fact, not a plan. It is a little formal and is common in writing and stories; in everyday conversation, people often use きっと〜と思う or 〜はずだ instead.
電気が消えている。田中さんはもう帰ったに違いない。
でんきがきえている。たなかさんはもうかえったにちがいない。
The lights are off. Mr. Tanaka must have gone home already.
Structure
Plain form of verb / い-adjective + に違いない (帰ったに違いない, おいしいに違いない); な-adjective stem + に違いない, with no だ (静かに違いない); noun + に違いない, with no だ (お兄さんに違いない). Negative and past plain forms are also used: 知らないに違いない, 〜だったに違いない. Polite: に違いありません.

Common mistakes

- Putting だ before に違いない. With な-adjectives and nouns, だ is dropped: ×静かだに違いない and ×学生だに違いない are wrong. Say 静かに違いない and 学生に違いない. For the past, だった is used: 学生だったに違いない.
- Using it for your own plans. に違いない is a judgment about facts, so ×わたしは来年日本へ行くに違いない sounds strange. For a plan, use つもりだ or 予定だ: わたしは来年日本へ行くつもりだ.
- Using it for a weak guess. に違いない means you are almost sure, so it does not go well with たぶん. If you are not sure, use かもしれない or でしょう: たぶん雨が降るでしょう. With に違いない, use きっと: きっと雨が降るに違いない.

- はずだ (should be, I expect)
- はずだ is a conclusion reasoned from facts such as a schedule or a rule: 会議は3時に終わる予定だから、部長はもうすぐ戻るはずだ (The meeting is scheduled to end at 3, so the manager should be back soon). に違いない is a strong feeling of certainty, often from what you see, and it can be more intuitive: 部長の顔がうれしそうだ。何かいいことがあったに違いない (The manager looks happy. Something good must have happened).
- に決まっている (surely, of course)
- Both show strong certainty and connect in the same way. に違いない is a little formal and is common in writing: 字を見ると、この手紙を書いたのは子どもに違いない (Looking at the handwriting, this letter must have been written by a child). に決まっている is conversational and sounds more one-sided and emotional: そんな話、うそに決まってるよ (That story is obviously a lie).
How this shows up on the JLPT
In the N3 grammar section, に違いない is often tested on its connection: no だ after な-adjectives and nouns (静かに違いない, 学生に違いない). It may also appear next to かもしれない, はずだ and に決まっている; look for a clue such as きっと or a fact the speaker has just seen. In reading passages, に違いない often shows the writer's or a character's strong conclusion.
