〜だろう/〜だろうと思う

だろう

probably (plain form of でしょう)

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

The plain form of でしょう. It shows the speaker's guess about something that is not certain, and it often goes with たぶん or きっと. At the end of a sentence, だろう is used in writing and in casual speech, where it can sound rather strong or masculine. In polite conversation, people say 〜でしょう or 〜だろうと思います instead. With rising intonation (〜だろう?) it asks the listener to agree.

§1Structure

Plain form of verb / い-adjective + だろう; な-adjective stem / noun + だろう (no だ: 静かだろう, 学生だろう). Past and negative plain forms are also used: 行っただろう, 行かないだろう, 静かだっただろう. 〜だろうと思う / 〜だろうと思います adds と思う after だろう.

§2Examples

  • あしたはたぶん晴れるだろう。

    あしたはたぶんはれるだろう。

It will probably be sunny tomorrow.

  • 田中さんは今日、来ないだろう。

    たなかさんはきょう、こないだろう。

Mr. Tanaka probably won't come today.

  • この問題は小学生には難しいだろう。

    このもんだいはしょうがくせいにはむずかしいだろう。

This problem is probably difficult for elementary school children.

  • 日曜日だから、デパートはにぎやかだろう。

    にちようびだから、デパートはにぎやかだろう。

It's Sunday, so the department store is probably crowded and lively.

  • あの人はたぶん留学生だろうと思います。

    あのひとはたぶんりゅうがくせいだろうとおもいます。

I think that person is probably an international student.

  • リンさんはもう国へ帰っただろう。

    リンさんはもうくにへかえっただろう。

Linh has probably already gone back to her country.

  • 彼は本当に来るだろうか。

    かれはほんとうにくるだろうか。

I wonder if he will really come.

  • 「この店、高いだろう?」「うん、ちょっとね。」

    「このみせ、たかいだろう?」「うん、ちょっとね。」

"This restaurant is expensive, isn't it?" "Yeah, a little."

§3Common mistakes

  • Adding だ or な before だろう after a な-adjective or a noun: 静かだだろう, 静かなだろう and 学生だだろう are wrong. だろう attaches directly: 静かだろう, 学生だろう.
  • Saying 〜でしょうと思います. Before と思います, the plain form だろう is used: 雨が降るでしょうと思います should be 雨が降るだろうと思います. The sentence is still polite, because the politeness is shown by 思います at the end.
  • Using だろう for your own plan. だろう is a guess, so わたしはあした図書館へ行くだろう sounds strange when you simply mean your intention. Say 行くつもりです or 行こうと思います.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜でしょう (polite 'probably')
The meaning is the same; the difference is politeness. でしょう is the polite form and is used when talking politely and in weather forecasts: あしたは雨が降るでしょう. だろう is the plain form, used in writing, in casual speech, and inside a sentence before と思う: あしたは雨が降るだろう。/あしたは雨が降るだろうと思います。 Saying 〜だろう at the end of a sentence to a teacher or a customer sounds too blunt.
〜かもしれない (might)
だろう shows that the speaker thinks something is fairly likely: 彼は来るだろう (He will probably come). かもしれない shows only a possibility, and the speaker is much less sure: 彼は来るかもしれない (He might come — or he might not).

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N4 grammar-form questions, だろう is tested through its connection (no だ after nouns and な-adjectives) and through the fixed phrase 〜だろうと思います, where でしょう is a wrong choice. In sentence-building questions, remember the order 〈plain form〉+ だろう + と + 思います. In reading passages written in the plain style, だろう at the end of a sentence tells you that the writer is guessing, not stating a fact, and たぶん or きっと earlier in the sentence is a hint that だろう follows.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the form that fits the blank: あしたは日曜日だから、公園は__だろう。

    あしたはにちようびだから、こうえんは__だろう。

  • 2. Which sentence is correct?

  • 3. What does the speaker express in 「空が暗い。午後は雨が降るだろう。」?

    そらがくらい。ごごはあめがふるだろう。
