〜と違って

とちがって

Unlike / different from

〜と違って means 'unlike A': it takes A as a point of comparison and says that B is not like A. It is used for differences between people, places and times, and also for 'different from what I expected or heard' (思っていたのと違って, 天気予報と違って). The main sentence talks about B, not A.

前に住んでいたアパートと違って、今の部屋はとても明るいです。

まえにすんでいたアパートとちがって、いまのへやはとてもあかるいです。

Unlike the apartment I lived in before, my room now is very bright.

Structure

Noun + と違って. With は for extra contrast: Noun + とは違って. Verb (plain form) + の + と違って: 思っていたのと違って. The written form is と違い. The rest of the sentence says how the other thing is different.

Common mistakes

3
  • Using the wrong particle. ✗ 東京に違って → ✓ 東京と違って. 違う takes と (or とは). Learners often mix this up with に比べて, which uses に.
  • Putting と違って directly after a verb. ✗ 思っていたと違って → ✓ 思っていたのと違って. A verb needs の before と違って.
  • Using も ('also') after と違って. ✗ 兄と違って、私も背が高い. と違って introduces a difference, so the second part must say something different: ✓ 兄と違って、私は背が低い. If you mean 'the same', say 兄と同じように、私も背が高い.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜に比べて (compared with)
に比べて compares two things on the same scale (more or less of the same quality): 東京に比べて、この町は家賃が安い (both have rent; here it is lower). と違って says that the two are different in kind, often opposite: 東京と違って、この町には高いビルがない (Tokyo has tall buildings; this town has none).
〜に対して (in contrast to)
〜のに対して usually follows a clause and shows both sides in one sentence, in a neutral and a little formal way: 姉は料理をよくするのに対して、妹はほとんどしない. と違って usually follows a noun, and the sentence then talks only about B: 姉と違って、妹はほとんど料理をしない. In everyday speech, と違って is more common.

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar questions, check the particle (と, not に) and the の after a verb (聞いていたのと違って). Do not confuse 〜と違って with 〜に違いない ('must be'), which uses the same kanji but has a different meaning. In sentence-ordering questions, the pattern is 'A と違って、B は ...'. In reading passages, と違って is a signal that the writer is about to show a contrast, which often helps you answer questions about the writer's point.
