〜ことはない

ことはない

There's no need to / you don't have to

〜ことはない tells someone that an action is not necessary. It is often used to comfort or calm the listener: 心配することはない means 'there's no need to worry'. The past form 〜ことはなかった looks back and says 'there was no need to do that'. After the dictionary form, ことはない can also mean 'it never happens' (この店が休むことはない), so read the context.

簡単な試験だから、そんなに心配することはないよ。

かんたんなしけんだから、そんなにしんぱいすることはないよ。

It's an easy exam, so there's no need to worry so much.

Structure

Verb dictionary form + ことはない (心配することはない, 行くことはない). Polite: ことはありません. Past: ことはなかった (there was no need to). It often goes with そんなに, わざわざ or 何も. Do not confuse it with Verb た-form + ことはない (have never done: 行ったことはない).

Common mistakes

3
  • Using the た-form. ✗ 心配したことはない for 'no need to worry' → ✓ 心配することはない. 心配したことはない means 'I have never worried'.
  • Using the ない-form. ✗ 急がないことはない for 'no need to hurry' → ✓ 急ぐことはない. 急がないことはない means 'it's not that I don't hurry'.
  • Using it as a rule that forbids something. ✗ ここでたばこを吸うことはない for 'No smoking here' → ✓ ここでたばこを吸ってはいけない. ことはない says the action is unnecessary, not that it is forbidden.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜なくてもいい (don't have to)
なくてもいい is a neutral way to say something is not necessary, and it is also used to ask for permission: 明日は来なくてもいいですか (Is it OK if I don't come tomorrow?). ことはない usually tells someone they don't need to do something, often to calm or encourage them: 泣くことはないよ (There's no need to cry). It is not used to ask for permission.
〜ないことはない (it's not that ... can't)
The form before ことはない changes the meaning. Dictionary form + ことはない means 'no need': 謝ることはない (You don't need to apologize). ない-form + ことはない is a weak 'yes': 行けないことはない (It's not that I can't go).
