〜てもしかたがない/〜てもしょうがない

てもしかたがない/てもしょうがない

It's no use -ing / It can't be helped if

This pattern has two uses. (1) After an action: doing it is useless because it will not change anything (今さら後悔してもしかたがない: there's no point regretting it now). (2) After a bad result: given the situation, it is natural or understandable, so you have to accept it (三回も遅れたのだから、怒られてもしかたがない: it's only natural to be scolded). Both uses carry a feeling of giving up or accepting something you don't like.

終わったことを今さら後悔してもしかたがない。

おわったことをいまさらこうかいしてもしかたがない。

There's no use regretting now what's already over.

Structure

Verb て-form + も + しかたがない (後悔してもしかたがない; negative: 〜なくても). い-adjective: 〜くても + しかたがない (古くても). な-adjective / noun: 〜でも + しかたがない (不便でも, 0点でも). しかたがない can be shortened to しかたない. しょうがない is more casual. Polite: しかたがありません / しかたないです.

Common mistakes

2
  • Dropping も and changing the meaning. 〜てしかたがない (without も) means 'so ... that I can't stand it': 眠くてしかたがない (I'm terribly sleepy). With も it means 'it's no use / it can't be helped': 夜遅くまで起きていたのだから、眠くてもしかたがない (I stayed up late, so it's only natural that I'm sleepy).
  • Wrong forms before も with adjectives. い-adjectives change い to くても, and な-adjectives and nouns take でも: ✗ 古いてもしかたがない → ✓ 古くてもしかたがない; ✗ 不便てもしかたがない → ✓ 不便でもしかたがない.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜てしかたがない/〜てしょうがない (extremely, can't help feeling)
〜てしかたがない (no も) shows a very strong feeling or sensation that you cannot control: 試験の結果が気になってしかたがない (I can't stop worrying about the exam results). 〜てもしかたがない (with も) judges an action as useless or a result as unavoidable: 結果を気にしてもしかたがない (There's no use worrying about the results). One small も changes 'I can't stand it' into 'it's no use'.
〜ことはない (there's no need to)
〜ことはない tells the listener that an action is not necessary, often to calm them: そんなに急ぐことはないよ (There's no need to hurry so much). 〜てもしかたがない says that the action is useless because it cannot change the result: 今から急いでもしかたがない。もう間に合わない (It's no use hurrying now. We won't make it anyway). ことはない is reassurance; てもしかたがない is giving up.

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar-form questions, the key is the も: choose 〜てもしかたがない when the meaning is 'no use' or 'can't be helped', and 〜てしかたがない when it is a strong feeling. Words like 今さら, いくら and 〜のだから before the blank are strong hints. In reading and listening, this expression shows that the speaker has given up or has accepted a bad result.
