〜てしかたがない/〜てしょうがない

てしかたがない/てしょうがない

can't help feeling ... / extremely ...

〜てしかたがない says that a feeling or a body sensation is so strong that the speaker can't control it: 心配でしかたがない (I can't stop worrying). It is also common with things that happen by themselves, like 気になる or 涙が出る. しょうがない is the more casual, spoken form. Do not confuse it with 〜てもしかたがない, which has も and means 'there's no point in ...'.

最近、甘い物が食べたくてしかたがない。

さいきん、あまいものがたべたくてしかたがない。

Lately I've had a terrible craving for sweets.

Structure

Verb て-form + しかたがない / しょうがない (気になってしかたがない). Verb ます-stem + たい → たくて (食べたくてしかたがない). い-adjective: drop い + くて (かゆくてしょうがない). な-adjective: + で (心配でしかたがない). しかたがない is often shortened to しかたない. Polite: しかたがありません / しょうがないです. Past: しかたがなかった / しょうがなかった.

Common mistakes

3
  • Adding も by mistake. With も the meaning changes to 'there's no point': 心配してもしかたがない = worrying won't help. To say 'I'm extremely worried', say 心配でしかたがない, with no も.
  • Joining adjectives in the wrong way: ×眠いてしょうがない → ○眠くてしょうがない, ×暇てしかたがない → ○暇でしかたがない.
  • Talking about another person's feelings directly. For someone else's feelings, ようだ, らしい or そうだ is usually added: 母は孫に会いたくてしかたがないようです.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜てもしかたがない (there's no point in ...)
One small も changes everything. Without も, the feeling is very strong: 試験の結果が気になってしかたがない (I can't stop thinking about the exam results). With も, the action is useless or the result must be accepted: 今さら気にしてもしかたがない (there's no point worrying about it now).
〜てたまらない (unbearably)
With most feelings both are fine: 寂しくてたまらない / 寂しくてしかたがない (I'm terribly lonely). てしかたがない is also very natural with things that happen by themselves, like 涙が出てしかたがない, and てしょうがない sounds more casual. たまらない often feels a little stronger, like 'I can't bear it'.

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar-form questions, check the connection before しかたがない / しょうがない (くて for い-adjectives and たい, で for な-adjectives). A common trap is the choice with も (〜てもしかたがない), which means 'no point', not 'extremely'. In listening, てしょうがない is frequent in casual talk about feelings such as 眠い, 暑い and 気になる.
