〜てたまらない

てたまらない

unbearably ... / dying to ...

〜てたまらない says that a feeling or a body sensation is so strong that the speaker can hardly stand it: 暑くてたまらない (it's unbearably hot), 会いたくてたまらない (I'm dying to see them). It is used with words for feelings and sensations, such as うれしい, 心配, 寂しい, 痛い, 眠い, 〜たい and 気になる. It usually describes the speaker's own feelings; for other people, ようだ, らしい or そうだ is usually added.

国の家族に会いたくてたまらない。

くにのかぞくにあいたくてたまらない。

I'm dying to see my family back home.

Structure

Common mistakes

3
  • Joining adjectives in the wrong way: ×暑いてたまらない → ○暑くてたまらない, ×心配てたまらない / ×心配にたまらない → ○心配でたまらない, ×会いたいでたまらない → ○会いたくてたまらない.
  • Using it for a quality that is not a feeling or a sensation: ×この机は大きくてたまらない. たまらない describes what someone feels. To say something is too big, use すぎる: この机は大きすぎる.
  • Talking about another person's feelings as if you could feel them: 田中さんは国に帰りたくてたまらない sounds as if you are inside Mr. Tanaka's head. In conversation, add ようだ, らしい or そうだ: 田中さんは国に帰りたくてたまらないようだ.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜てしかたがない (can't help feeling)
The two are very close, and with most feelings both work: 心配でたまらない / 心配でしかたがない (I'm terribly worried). てしょうがない sounds more casual. てしかたがない is also very common with things that happen by themselves, such as 涙が出る or 気になる. たまらない often feels a little stronger, as if you can't bear it.
〜すぎる (too ...)
すぎる says that the degree of something is more than it should be, and it can describe things, not only feelings: このかばんは重すぎる (this bag is too heavy). てたまらない describes how strongly someone feels: 足が痛くてたまらない (my feet hurt so much I can't stand it).

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar-form questions, you often have to pick the right connection before たまらない: くて for い-adjectives and たい, で for な-adjectives. Sentence-building questions (★) test the order 'feeling word + て + たまらない'. You may also have to choose between てたまらない and similar patterns such as てしかたがない, which are usually both acceptable, so read the choices for form errors.
