〜ことか
ことか
How ...! / So very ...! (strong feeling)
〜ことか expresses a very strong feeling: 'how (much) ...!' or 'so many times!'. It looks like a question, but it is not one, and no answer is expected. The speaker is saying that the degree is very high, as in どんなに心配したことか (How worried I was!). It is a little literary and is common in writing and emotional speech.
合格の知らせを聞いて、どんなにうれしかったことか。
ごうかくのしらせをきいて、どんなにうれしかったことか。
How happy I was when I heard I had passed!
Structure
Plain form of verb / い-adjective + ことか (心配したことか, 寂しいことか). な-adjective + な + ことか (大切なことか); in the past, 〜だった + ことか (大変だったことか). It is usually used with a word such as どんなに, なんと, どれだけ or 何度. Polite: 〜ことでしょう.

Common mistakes
3
- Reading it as a real question. どんなに待ったことか does not ask 'How long did you wait?'. It means 'I waited so long!'. Do not answer it, and do not use it to ask for information.
- Leaving out the degree word. うれしかったことか alone sounds incomplete. Usually add a word like どんなに, なんと or 何度: ✓ どんなにうれしかったことか.
- Forgetting な after a な-adjective. ✗ なんと大切ことか / ✗ なんと大切だことか → ✓ なんと大切なことか.
How it's different from similar grammar
2
- 〜ものか (I'll never ...!)
- Both end in か and are not real questions, but the meaning is very different. ものか is a strong 'no': あんなまずい店に二度と行くものか (I'll never go to that awful restaurant again!). ことか says that the degree is very high: あの店にはこれまで何度行ったことか (I've been to that restaurant so many times!).
- 〜か (question)
- A normal question with か asks for information: 駅まで何分かかりますか (How many minutes does it take to the station?). ことか gives the speaker's feeling and expects no answer: 駅まで重い荷物を持って、どんなに大変だったことか (Carrying heavy bags to the station, how hard it was!).
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar-choice questions, どんなに, なんと or 何度 near the start of the sentence is a strong hint for 〜ことか at the end. Questions may also ask you to choose between ことか and ものか, so check whether the sentence is about a high degree or a strong refusal. In reading passages, ことか shows the writer's strong feelings, which are often asked about.
