〜こと(指示・規則)

こと

Must / do ... (written instruction or rule)

Ending a sentence with 〜こと gives an instruction or a rule: 'you must do ...' or 'do not ...'. It is used in written rules, notices, exam instructions and school handouts. Teachers and parents also use it when they state rules to students or children. Because it is a short, direct order, it is usually not used when you speak politely to customers or superiors.

レポートは金曜日の5時までに提出すること。

レポートはきんようびのごじまでにていしゅつすること。

Reports must be handed in by 5 o'clock on Friday.

Structure

Verb dictionary form + こと (提出すること). Verb ない-form + こと (話さないこと). The sentence simply ends with こと, without だ or です.

Common mistakes

3
  • Adding です or だ to a rule. A written rule simply ends with こと: ✓ 9時までに来ること. 9時までに来ることです sounds like advice or an explanation instead (see 〜ことだ).
  • Using the た-form or the ます-form. ✗ 提出したこと / ✗ 提出しますこと → ✓ 提出すること. The instruction uses the dictionary form or the ない-form.
  • Saying it to customers or superiors. 「お客様、ここで待つこと」 sounds like an order. To a customer, say こちらでお待ちください.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜ことだ (advice)
〜ことだ is advice for getting a good result, often after a condition like 〜たいなら: やせたいなら、甘い物を食べないことだ (If you want to lose weight, don't eat sweets). 〜こと with no だ is a rule or an instruction that people must follow: 教室で物を食べないこと (Do not eat in the classroom).
〜なさい (command to a child or student)
なさい is a spoken command to the person in front of you: 早く寝なさい (Go to bed now). 〜こと states a rule, often in writing, for anyone it applies to: 夜10時までに部屋に戻ること (Be back in your room by 10 p.m.). Also, なさい has no negative form, but 〜ないこと can state what is not allowed.

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 reading, 〜こと often appears in notices, rules and instructions (お知らせ, 注意, 申込み方法), and questions ask what you must or must not do. In grammar-choice questions, a heading like ルール or 注意 and a sentence with no ending after こと is a hint. Do not confuse it with 〜ことだ (advice) or 〜ことにする (decision).
