〜ということだ/〜とのことだ(伝聞)
ということだ/とのことだ

Common mistakes
3
- Using な with a noun or a な-adjective. ✗ 駅前の店は明日休みなということだ → ✓ 休みだということだ / 休みとのことだ. Before ということだ, a noun or な-adjective takes だ, not な. With とのことだ, だ can also be left out (お元気とのこと).
- Using とのことだ with friends. 「田中さん、来ないとのことだよ」 sounds stiff in casual talk. With friends, 田中さん、来ないって or 来ないそうだよ is more natural.
- Mixing it up with 〜ということだ meaning 'that means'. After つまり, 〜ということだ usually gives a conclusion, not something you heard. When you report news, showing where it came from (〜によると, 〜の話では, 〜から) makes the hearsay meaning clear.
How it's different from similar grammar
2
- 〜そうです (I hear, hearsay)
- そうだ is the most common way to report what you heard, in both speech and writing: 明日は休みだそうです (I hear tomorrow is a holiday). ということだ and とのことだ sound more formal and fit news or work. Also, hearsay そうだ has no past form, but these can be put in the past to report what you were told: 明日は休みだということでした (I was told tomorrow is a holiday).
- 〜ということだ (it means that)
- The same words can also give a conclusion or explain a meaning, often after つまり: 駐車場がいっぱいだ。つまり、客が多いということだ (The parking lot is full. That means there are many customers). In the hearsay meaning, there is usually a source such as によると: 店員の話によると、今日は客が多いということだ (According to the clerk, there are many customers today).
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar-choice questions, 〜によると or 〜の話では at the start of the sentence is a strong hint for 〜ということだ or 〜そうだ at the end. In reading and listening, とのことです often appears in phone messages and emails at work, and questions ask what the other person wants. Check who said the information and what they want you to do.
