〜ということだ(意味・結論)
ということだ
It means that / in other words (conclusion)
〜ということだ here explains what something means or states a conclusion drawn from a fact: 'that means ...' or 'in other words ...'. The speaker looks at a situation or at what someone said and puts its meaning into other words. In the question form 〜ということですか, you check whether you have understood correctly. This is different from the hearsay 〜ということだ, which reports information from someone else.
田中さんはまだ返事をくれない。つまり、あまり行きたくないということだ。
たなかさんはまだへんじをくれない。つまり、あまりいきたくないということだ。
Tanaka-san still hasn't answered. In other words, he doesn't really want to go.

Common mistakes
3
- Reading it as hearsay. In 値段が半分になった。つまり、半額ということだ, the speaker is not reporting news. つまり shows that it is the speaker's own conclusion: 'that means half price'.
- Dropping という. ✗ つまり、行けないことだ → ✓ つまり、行けないということだ. To state a conclusion after つまり, you need という. A verb + ことだ at the end of a sentence usually gives advice instead (早く寝ることだ).
- Using な before という. ✗ 便利なということだ → ✓ 便利だということだ (or 便利ということだ). A な-adjective or noun takes だ or nothing before という.

- 〜ということだ (I hear that)
- The hearsay ということだ reports information from a source, often with によると or の話では: 部長の話によると、会議は中止になったということだ (According to the manager, the meeting has been cancelled). The meaning / conclusion ということだ is the speaker's own understanding of a fact, often with つまり: 会議室が暗い。つまり、会議はもう終わったということだ (The meeting room is dark. That means the meeting is already over).
- 〜わけだ (no wonder / that's why)
- わけだ often shows that a result is natural because of a reason, like 'no wonder': 10年も日本に住んでいたのか。日本語が上手なわけだ (He lived in Japan for ten years? No wonder his Japanese is good). ということだ puts the meaning of a fact into other words: 10年住んでいた。つまり、日本の生活に慣れているということだ (He lived there for ten years. That means he is used to life in Japan).
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar-choice questions, つまり or ということは before the blank is a strong hint for 〜ということだ. In reading passages, 〜ということだ often sums up the writer's point, and questions like 「〜とはどういうことか」 ask you to find it. Also check whether there is a source (によると): if there is, the ということだ is probably hearsay.
Quick check (3 questions)
Choose the words that fit the blank: このチケットは子どもは無料だ。つまり、6歳の弟はお金を払わなくていい__。
このチケットはこどもはむりょうだ。つまり、ろくさいのおとうとはおかねをはらわなくていい__。
