〜たつもりだ/〜つもりで

たつもりだ/つもりで

believe that one has done / as if, with the feeling that

Here つもり is not a plan. 〜たつもりだ says what the speaker believes they did, often when the facts or other people's views are different: 鍵をかけたつもりだった (I thought I had locked it, but ...). With adjectives and nouns it shows how someone sees themselves, which may not match reality: 父はまだ若いつもりだ. 〜つもりで + action means doing something while imagining that something is true: 旅行に行ったつもりで、そのお金を貯金した (I saved the money, telling myself I'd already been on the trip).

ドアの鍵をかけたつもりだったが、かかっていなかった。

ドアのかぎをかけたつもりだったが、かかっていなかった。

I thought I had locked the door, but it wasn't locked.

Structure

Verb た-form + つもりだ (かけたつもりだ). Verb ている + つもりだ (分かっているつもりだ). い-adjective + つもり (若いつもり). な-adjective + な + つもり (元気なつもり). Noun + の + つもり (プロのつもり). 〜つもりで + action: 'with the feeling that ..., as if ...' (行ったつもりで貯金する). Negative: 〜たつもりはない (I don't think I did / I didn't mean to).

Common mistakes

2
  • Mixing it up with the plan つもり. For a plan, use the dictionary form: ×明日、病院に行ったつもりです → ○明日、病院に行くつもりです. 行ったつもり means 'I believe I went' or 'as if I had gone'.
  • Leaving out の after a noun or な after a な-adjective: ×先生つもりで → ○先生のつもりで, ×元気つもりだ → ○元気なつもりだ.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜つもりです (plan to)
With the dictionary form, つもりです is a plan for the future: 来年、日本へ留学するつもりです (I plan to study in Japan next year). With the た-form, it is about the past and what you believe happened: 窓は全部閉めたつもりです (I believe I closed all the windows). Look at the verb form before つもり.
〜ふりをする (pretend)
ふりをする is acting in front of other people so that they believe something false: 知らないふりをする (pretend not to know). つもり is about what is in your own mind; you are not trying to trick anyone: 知っているつもりだったが、よく分かっていなかった (I thought I knew, but I didn't really understand).

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar-form questions, つもり after a た-form often appears in a sentence with だったが / だったのに, where the second half shows the belief was wrong; wrong choices include ばかり, こと and まま. Questions also test the difference between 行くつもり (plan) and 行ったつもり (belief). In reading, 〜つもりで often explains a person's attitude, such as saving money 'as if' they had spent it.
