〜気がする/〜ような気がする

きがする/ようなきがする

have a feeling that

Use 〜気がする when you feel that something is so, but you have no clear reason or proof. It is softer and less sure than 〜と思う. Adding ような (〜ような気がする) makes the statement even vaguer. The feeling is the speaker's own.

どこかでこの人に会ったことがある気がします。

どこかでこのひとにあったことがあるきがします。

I have a feeling that I have met this person somewhere before.

Structure

Plain form of verb / い-adjective + 気がする; な-adjective + な + 気がする. With ような: plain form of verb / い-adjective + ような気がする; な-adjective + な + ような気がする; noun + の + ような気がする. Nouns usually take the 〜のような気がする form. Negative: 〜気がしない.

Common mistakes

3
  • Wrong connection after な-adjectives and nouns. ✗ 無理だ気がする → ✓ 無理な気がする. ✗ 学生気がする → ✓ 学生のような気がする. A な-adjective needs な, and a noun usually takes のような.
  • Mixing up 気がする with 気になる (to be on one's mind, to be curious or worried about) and 気にする (to worry about, to mind). ✗ 友だちの返事が気がする → ✓ 友だちの返事が気になる (My friend's reply is on my mind).
  • Using the wrong particle. The set phrase is 気がする with が. ✗ 雨が降る気をする → ✓ 雨が降る気がする.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜と思います (I think that)
〜と思う gives your opinion or a judgment, often with a reason: 天気予報を見たので、明日は雨が降ると思う (I saw the forecast, so I think it will rain tomorrow). 〜気がする is only a vague feeling without a clear reason: なんとなく、明日は雨が降るような気がする (Somehow I have a feeling it will rain tomorrow). When you state your opinion clearly, for example in a discussion, 〜と思う is the usual choice.
〜がする (a sound / smell / taste is sensed)
Noun + がする is used for things you sense with your body: 変なにおいがする (There is a strange smell), 大きい音がした (There was a loud sound). 気がする is a feeling in your mind about a whole sentence: だれかに見られている気がする (I have a feeling that someone is watching me). Before 気がする you put a clause, not a sound, smell or taste word.

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar-form questions, the choices often mix 気がする, 気になる, 気にする and 気がつく, so learn the meaning of each set phrase. In sentence-ordering questions, remember the fixed order 〜ような + 気が + する and that な-adjectives need な before 気. In reading passages, 〜気がする tells you that the writer is giving an unsure impression, not a fact.
