〜ふりをする
ふりをする
Pretend to / act as if
〜ふりをする means 'to pretend': to act as if something is true when it is not, so that other people believe it. 知らないふりをする means that the person really knows but acts as if he or she doesn't. It is used for people, and sometimes animals, who act that way on purpose. The past ふりをした and the continuing ふりをしている are very common.
息子は、私に呼ばれても聞こえないふりをしました。
むすこは、わたしによばれてもきこえないふりをしました。
My son pretended not to hear me, even when I called him.

Common mistakes
3
- Using the wrong word before ふり. ふり is a noun, so な-adjectives take な and nouns take の: ✕ 元気のふり → ○ 元気なふり, ✕ 学生なふり → ○ 学生のふり. Verbs connect directly: ✕ 知らないのふり → ○ 知らないふり.
- Using ふり to make a guess. ふり is about someone acting, not about what the speaker thinks is true. To say 'Mr. Tanaka seems tired': ✕ 田中さんは疲れているふりだ → ○ 田中さんは疲れているようだ / 疲れているみたいだ.
- Mixing up ふり and つもり for a plan. つもり shows what you plan to do; ふり shows pretending. ✕ 来年、日本へ行くふりです (to mean 'I plan to go') → ○ 来年、日本へ行くつもりです.

- 〜たつもりだ (I thought I had ...)
- 〜たつもりだ is about what you yourself believe. You are not trying to fool anyone; you were just wrong: 鍵をかけたつもりだったが、かかっていなかった (I thought I had locked it, but it wasn't locked). 〜ふりをする is acting on purpose so that other people believe something that is not true: 宿題をしたふりをして、ゲームをしていた (I pretended I had done my homework and played games).
- 〜ようだ (it seems, guess)
- 〜ようだ is the speaker's guess from what he or she sees or hears, and the guess may be true: 部屋が静かだから、子どもたちはもう寝ているようだ (The room is quiet, so it seems the children are already asleep). 〜ふりをする says that it is not true and the person is only acting: 子どもたちは寝ているふりをして、布団の中で話していた (The children were pretending to sleep and were talking under the covers).
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar-choice questions, ふりをする is tested against つもり, ようだ, and みたいだ. Look for words that show the truth is different, such as 本当は or 〜のに: they point to ふり. Also check the connection before ふり: な after な-adjectives (平気なふり), の after nouns (医者のふり), and nothing after verbs (知らないふり). In reading, ふり tells you that what a person shows is not what he or she really feels or knows.
