〜をしている(外見・性質)
をしている
Have (a shape, color, face, voice)
〜をしている describes how a person, animal, or thing looks or what it is like: its shape, color, face, eyes, voice, and so on. Here する is not an action; it shows a quality that the person or thing has. It is usually used as をしている / をしていた (or をした before a noun), and the noun needs a word that describes it: 丸い形をしている, not just 形をしている. In English, 'have' or 'look' is often the best translation: 青い目をしている means 'has blue eyes', and 疲れた顔をしている means 'looks tired'.
この石は、ハートの形をしています。
このいしは、ハートのかたちをしています。
This stone is shaped like a heart.
Structure
Describing word + noun of shape, color, face, eyes, voice, hair, or body + をしている. The noun needs a describing word: an い-adjective (丸い形, 青い目), a な-adjective + な (きれいな声), a noun + の (ハートの形), or a verb in the た-form (困った顔, 疲れた顔). Before another noun, をした is common: 長い髪をした人 (をしている人 is also possible). For the past, use をしていた.

Common mistakes
3
- Leaving out the describing word. The noun (形, 色, 顔, 声) needs a word that tells what it is like: ✕ この花は色をしている → ○ この花はきれいな色をしている.
- Translating 'have' word for word. To describe how someone looks, 持っている and がある sound unnatural in everyday Japanese: ✕ 妹は長い髪を持っている → ○ 妹は長い髪をしている (or 妹は髪が長い).
- Using をしている for clothes. For clothes such as 服, シャツ, and セーター, use 着ている: ✕ 田中さんは赤いシャツをしている → ○ 田中さんは赤いシャツを着ている. Some small items do take する, such as ネクタイをしている, but that is a different use (wearing something), not this pattern.
How it's different from similar grammar
1
- 〜がする (I can hear / smell / taste ...)
- Both can use 声, but the meaning is different. 〜がする says that you notice a sound, smell, or taste right now: 外から犬の声がする (I can hear a dog outside). 〜をしている describes a quality that a person or animal has: あの犬は低い声をしている (That dog has a low voice). Note the particles: が with する for what you notice, を with している for what someone or something has.
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar-choice questions, the blank often comes right after 形, 色, 顔, or 声, and you must choose the right particle and verb: をしている, not がしている or をしてある. You may also need to choose between をしている and がする. Ask: is it a quality the thing has (をしている) or something you notice now with your senses (がする)? In sentence-ordering questions, remember that the describing word comes first and をした can come before a noun (青い目をした猫). In reading and listening, this pattern is common when someone describes a lost item or a person they are looking for.
