〜たところ(結果)
たところ
When I did ..., it turned out that
'A たところ、B' means 'when I did A, the result was B / I found out B'. A is usually something done on purpose to find out or to try (asking, checking, trying), and B is the result or the new information. It is more formal than the discovery 〜たら, so it is common in reports, emails and news. It is different from 〜たところだ at the end of a sentence, which means 'have just done'.
店に問い合わせたところ、その商品はもう売り切れだと言われた。
みせにといあわせたところ、そのしょうひんはもううりきれだといわれた。
When I asked the shop, I was told that the item was already sold out.

Common mistakes
2
- Mixing it up with 〜たところだ ('have just done'). At the end of a sentence, 〜たところだ means 'just now': 今、駅に着いたところです. In the middle of a sentence, 〜たところ、B introduces a result: 駅に着いたところ、電車が止まっていた (When I arrived at the station, the trains had stopped).
- Putting a request, a plan or an invitation after it. The second part tells a result that has already happened: ✗ 調べたところ、教えてください → ✓ 調べたら、教えてください; ✗ 家に帰ったところ、宿題をします → ✓ 家に帰ってから、宿題をします.
How it's different from similar grammar
2
- 〜ところだ (be about to / be doing / have just done)
- 〜ところだ ends the sentence and shows a point in time: 今から出かけるところだ (I'm about to go out), 今ご飯を食べたところだ (I've just eaten). 〜たところ with a comma joins two parts and tells what happened as a result: 先生に聞いてみたところ、テストは来週になったそうだ (When I asked the teacher, I heard that the test has been moved to next week). So check whether ところ ends the sentence or is followed by another clause.
- 〜たら/〜と (when I did ..., I found)
- The meanings are close: 店に電話したら、休みだった and 店に電話したところ、休みだった both mean 'When I called the shop, it was closed'. 〜たところ is more formal and fits reports and polite writing. It is also used mostly when A is something done on purpose (asking, checking, trying). たら can also be a condition for the future (電話したら、教えてね), but たところ cannot.
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar and reading, 〜たところ appears in formal texts such as reports and emails (〜に問い合わせたところ、〜). Questions may ask you to tell it apart from 〜たところだ ('have just done') or from 〜たばかり. A key point: in 〜たところ、B, the part B is a past result, not a request or a plan. In reading passages, the information after たところ is often the answer to the question.
