〜ところに/〜ところへ/〜ところを
ところに/ところへ/ところを
just when / right at the moment that
This pattern grows out of 〜ところだ. ところ is a scene or stage of an action (about to do, doing, just did), and the particle links that scene to the next event. With に or へ, something arrives at that scene: a person comes, or a call comes in. With を, the scene is the object of the next verb: someone sees it, finds it or helps in it. The second event often changes or stops what the person was doing.
ちょうど出かけるところへ、友だちが遊びに来ました。
ちょうどでかけるところへ、ともだちがあそびにきました。
Just as I was about to go out, a friend came to visit.
Structure
Verb dictionary form / ている form / た-form + ところに・ところへ・ところを. ところに and ところへ are followed by verbs of coming or arriving (来る, 入ってくる, 電話がかかってくる, 届く). ところを is followed by verbs that act on the scene (見る, 見られる, 見つける, 助ける, 注意される, 写真を撮られる). In some set phrases, an い-adjective or noun + の can also come before ところ: いいところへ来た, お忙しいところを, お休みのところを.

Common mistakes
3
- Choosing the particle without looking at the verb that follows. 寝ているところに、先生に見られた is wrong: 見られる acts on the scene, so say 寝ているところを、先生に見られた. In the opposite case, 食べているところを、友だちが来た is wrong: 来る is a verb of arriving, so say 食べているところに(へ)、友だちが来た.
- Using it like a general 'when'. 子どものところに、北海道に住んでいました is wrong, because ところ here means one exact moment of an action, not a long period of life. For a general time, use とき: 子どものとき、北海道に住んでいました.
- Choosing the wrong verb form before ところ. The form decides the stage: 出かけるところに = just before going out, 出かけているところに = while out, 出かけたところに = just after going out. If the friend came before you left the house, 出かけたところに友だちが来た does not say what you mean.
How it's different from similar grammar

- ところだ (about to / in the middle of / have just)
- 〜ところだ ends a sentence and only reports the stage you are at: 今、昼ご飯を食べているところです (I'm eating lunch right now). 〜ところに/へ/を comes in the middle of a sentence, and a second event always follows it: 昼ご飯を食べているところに、客が来た (A visitor came just when I was eating lunch).
- たところ (when I did ..., I found that ...)
- 〜たところ has no particle after it, and it introduces what you found out as a result of your own action: 店に電話してみたところ、今日は休みだと言われた (When I called the shop, I was told it was closed today). 〜たところに/へ shows only timing: another event arrived at the moment right after the action, as in 店を出たところへ、バスが来た.
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar questions, the particle after ところ is often the blank. Read the verb that follows: 来る, 入ってくる, 電話がかかってくる or 届く take ところに/ところへ; 見る, 見られる, 見つかる, 助ける or 注意される take ところを. The polite opening お忙しいところ(を) often appears in listening and in e-mail style reading passages. In sentence-building questions, keep the verb form + ところ + particle together as one block.
