ところが
ところが
however (contrary to expectation)
ところが introduces a result that goes against what sentence A made you expect. It often carries surprise, and the result can be bad or good. It is common when telling a story or explaining what happened. Because B is a fact that the speaker did not expect, ところが is not used before your own opinion or request; use でも or しかし for those.
天気予報では晴れると言っていた。ところが、午後から雨が降り出した。
てんきよほうでははれるといっていた。ところが、ごごからあめがふりだした。
The weather forecast said it would be sunny. However, it started raining in the afternoon.
Structure
Sentence A。ところが、sentence B。 ところが is a conjunction at the start of the second sentence. Sentence B is a fact (something that happened or is true), very often in the past tense. It is not followed by the speaker's own request, invitation, wish or plan. (When telling a story, ところが、どうなったと思いますか is also used to lead up to the surprising fact.)

How it's different from similar grammar

- しかし / でも (but, however)
- しかし and でも are general words for 'but'. After them you can put a fact, your opinion, a request or a plan: 高い。でも、買います (It's expensive, but I'll buy it). ところが is narrower: the second sentence is a fact that goes against expectation, and it often sounds surprised. 安いと思った。ところが、レジで見ると高かった (I thought it was cheap. But at the register it turned out to be expensive).
- ところで (by the way)
- The two words look alike, but ところで starts a new topic and has no contrast: 今日は暑いね。ところで、宿題やった? (It's hot today. By the way, did you do the homework?). ところが continues the same story and shows that the next fact was not what you expected.
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar questions and in the 'grammar in a passage' section, you often choose between ところが, ところで, それで and それに. Read both sentences: if the second one is a fact that goes against the first, ところが is the answer. In reading passages, the part after ところが is often the key point of the story, so read it carefully.
