〜のではないか/〜んじゃないか
のではないか/んじゃないか
I suspect that / isn't it that ...?
〜のではないか shows the speaker's guess: 'I think that it may be so'. Although it has ない, it is not a negative sentence. 難しいのではないか means 'I think it is difficult'. It is also a soft way to give an opinion, because the speaker does not say it too strongly. In conversation it becomes 〜んじゃないか or 〜んじゃない?.
田中さんは、今日は来ないのではないかと思います。
たなかさんは、きょうはこないのではないかとおもいます。
I think Tanaka-san may not come today.

Common mistakes

- Forgetting な after a な-adjective or a noun. ✗ 暇のではないか / ✗ 学生んじゃない? → ✓ 暇なのではないか / 学生なんじゃない?.
- Translating it as a negative sentence. 高いのではないか does not mean 'it isn't expensive'. It means 'I think it's (too) expensive'. If you want to guess 'it isn't expensive', say 高くないのではないか.
- Using んじゃない in a report or a formal letter. It is spoken style. In writing, use 〜のではないか or 〜のではないだろうか.
How it's different from similar grammar

- 〜かもしれない (maybe, might)
- かもしれない only shows a possibility, and the speaker may think it is 50/50: 午後は雪になるかもしれない (It might snow in the afternoon). のではないか usually shows that the speaker leans toward thinking it is true, and it is often used to give an opinion softly: 午後は雪になるのではないかと思う (I think it will probably snow in the afternoon).
- 〜だろう (probably)
- だろう is a plain guess about something uncertain: 彼はもう家に着いただろう (He has probably got home by now). のではないか is a guess made as a kind of question, so it sounds softer and more careful. It is often used when the speaker is a little worried or wants to share an opinion politely: 彼はもう家に着いたのではないでしょうか (Hasn't he got home by now, do you think?).
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar-choice questions, look for 〜と思う, 〜と心配する or 〜と考える after the blank: 〜のではないかと思う is a very common set phrase. Check the な in な-adjective and noun forms (無理なのではないか). In reading passages, 〜のではないだろうか often marks the writer's main opinion, so questions about the writer's view often point to that sentence.
