〜たらどうですか

たらどうですか

Why don't you...? / How about doing...? (suggestion)

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

〜たらどうですか literally means 'How would it be if you did...?'. You use it to suggest an idea to a listener who has a problem or cannot decide what to do. The action is done by the listener, not by the speaker. It is often used together with 〜てみる (聞いてみたらどうですか) to make the suggestion lighter.

§1Structure

Verb た-form + ら + どうですか (休んだらどうですか, 聞いてみたらどうですか). More polite: 〜たらいかがですか. Casual: 〜たらどう?, and even shorter, 〜たら?

§2Examples

§3Common mistakes

  • Attaching たら to the wrong verb form: ✗ 休むたらどうですか, ✗ 休みたらどうですか. Use the た-form + ら: ○ 休んだらどうですか.
  • Using it when you ask for advice yourself: ✗ どうしたらどうですか. The person who needs advice asks どうしたらいいですか; the person who gives advice says 〜たらどうですか.
  • Using 〜たらどうですか freely to a boss or an older person. Depending on the tone, it can sound like you are pushing them or criticizing them ('Why don't you just do it?'). To people above you, 〜たらいかがですか or a softer sentence such as 〜といいと思います is safer.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜たほうがいい (you had better)
〜たほうがいい is stronger advice. It says that this choice is better and often hints that something bad may happen if you do not follow it: 熱があるから、病院へ行ったほうがいいですよ (You have a fever, so you had better go to the hospital). 〜たらどうですか only offers an idea and leaves the decision to the listener: 病院へ行ったらどうですか (Why don't you go to the hospital?).
〜ませんか (won't you... with me?)
〜ませんか usually invites the listener to do something together with the speaker: いっしょに公園を散歩しませんか (Won't you take a walk in the park with me?). 〜たらどうですか suggests something that the listener will do, and the speaker does not join: 公園を散歩したらどうですか (Why don't you take a walk in the park?).

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N4 grammar-form questions, you may need to choose the verb form before どうですか (聞いたら, not 聞くたら or 聞いて), or choose between 〜たらどうですか and 〜たらいいですか by checking who has the problem and who gives the advice. In listening response questions, 〜たらどうですか and the short form 〜たら? are common; a natural reply is そうですね、そうします or そうしてみます.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. 「少し休んだらどうですか。」 What is the speaker doing?

    「すこしやすんだらどうですか。」

  • 2. Choose the form that fits the blank: 道がわからないなら、交番で__どうですか。

    みちがわからないなら、こうばんで__どうですか。

  • 3. Choose B's answer. A: 「日本人の友だちがほしいんですが、どうしたらいいですか。」 B: 「__。」

    A:「にほんじんのともだちがほしいんですが、どうしたらいいですか。」 B:「__。」
