〜たらいいですか

たらいいですか

What / how / where should I...? (asking for advice)

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

〜たらいいですか literally means 'If I do what, will it be good?'. You use it when you do not know what to do and want advice or instructions from the listener. It is often used after 〜んですが, which explains the problem first. The answer 〜たらいいですよ gives simple, friendly advice.

§1Structure

Question word (どう, 何, どこ, いつ, だれ, どの〜 …) + verb た-form + ら + いいですか (どうしたらいいですか, どこで買ったらいいですか). More polite: 〜たらいいでしょうか. Casual: 〜たらいい? A typical answer: 〜たらいいですよ, 〜てください, or 〜たほうがいいですよ.

§2Examples

  • 切符をなくしてしまったんですが、どうしたらいいですか。

    きっぷをなくしてしまったんですが、どうしたらいいですか。

I've lost my ticket. What should I do?

§3Common mistakes

  • Attaching たら to the dictionary form or ます-stem: ✗ 何を買うたらいいですか, ✗ どこへ行きたらいいですか. 〜たら is made from the た-form: ○ 何を買ったらいいですか, ○ どこへ行ったらいいですか.
  • Mixing it up with 〜たらどうですか. 〜たらいいですか asks for advice; 〜たらどうですか gives advice. ✗ どうしたらどうですか is not possible. Ask with どうしたらいいですか and answer with 〜たらどうですか or 〜たらいいですよ.
  • Translating 'What should I do?' word for word as 何をしますか or 何をしなければなりませんか. The first only asks about a plan or habit ('What will you do?'), and the second asks about a duty. To ask for advice, use どうしたらいいですか.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜たらどうですか (why don't you...?)
The two make a pair. The person with the problem asks: かぜをひいたんですが、どうしたらいいですか (I've caught a cold. What should I do?). The other person suggests: 薬を飲んで、早く寝たらどうですか (Why don't you take some medicine and go to bed early?). 〜たらいいですか has a question word and asks; 〜たらどうですか has no question word and proposes.
〜ばいいですか (what should I...? with the ば-form)
どうすればいいですか and どうしたらいいですか mean almost the same thing, and both are correct. 〜たらいいですか is a little more conversational, and 〜ばいいですか is a little more formal. Only the verb form is different: したら (た-form + ら) and すれば (ば-form).

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N4 grammar-form questions, the blank is usually the verb (choose したら, not するたら or して) or the ending (choose いいですか after a question word, not どうですか). In sentence-ordering questions, the order is 'question word → verb たら → いいですか', for example どこで/降りたら/いいですか. In listening, どうしたらいいですか signals that the next speaker will give instructions, and those instructions are often the answer.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the form that fits the blank: 電車にかさを忘れたんですが、どう__いいですか。

    でんしゃにかさをわすれたんですが、どう__いいですか。

  • 2. B gives advice to A. Choose what A says. A: 「日本語の辞書を買いたいんですが、__。」 B: 「駅前の本屋で買ったらいいですよ。」

    A:「にほんごのじしょをかいたいんですが、__。」 B:「えきまえのほんやでかったらいいですよ。」

  • 3. 「どこで切符を買ったらいいですか。」 What is the speaker doing?

    「どこできっぷをかったらいいですか。」
