JLPT N4

〜んですが、〜

んですが

Preface before a request, question, or invitation

← All N4 grammar pointsTiếng Việt

〜んですが explains your situation first and then leads softly into a request, a question, asking for advice or permission, or an invitation. The が here does not mean 'but'; it only connects the background to what you really want to say. If you stop at 〜んですが……, the listener understands that you need help, and this sounds polite and reserved.

§1Structure

Plain form of verb / い-adjective + んですが、 + request / question / invitation (行きたいんですが、…; わからないんですが、…; 書いたんですが、…). な-adjective and noun: 〜なんですが (好きなんですが、休みなんですが). Casual: 〜んだけど、…. The second half can be left unsaid: 〜んですが……。

§2Examples

    しやくしょへいきたいんですが、みちをおしえていただけませんか。

I'd like to go to the city hall. Could you please tell me the way?

    パソコンがうごかないんですが、どうしたらいいですか。

My computer won't work. What should I do?

  • テニスが好きなんですが、いいクラブを知りませんか。

I like tennis. Do you know a good club?

  • すみません、この漢字の読み方がわからないんですが……。

    すみません、このかんじのよみかたがわからないんですが……。

Excuse me, I don't know how to read this kanji... (could you help me?)

  • あしたは休みなんですが、いっしょに映画を見に行きませんか。

I have the day off tomorrow. Would you like to go see a movie together?

  • ちょっと聞きたいんだけど、今いい?

    あたまがいたいんですが、はやくかえってもいいですか。

I have a headache. May I go home early?

§3Common mistakes

  • Wrong form before んですが: ✗ 休みだんですが, ✗ 行きますんですが. Use な after nouns and な-adjectives, and the plain form of verbs: ○ 休みなんですが, ○ 行くんですが.
  • Reading が as 'but' and looking for a contrast. In 郵便局へ行きたいんですが、この近くにありますか there is no contrast; が only introduces the question. Do not translate it as 'I want to go to the post office, but...'.
  • Using から before a request to someone you should be polite to: 道がわからないから、教えてください is grammatical, but it sounds like a demand. 道がわからないんですが、教えていただけませんか is much softer.

§4How it's different from similar grammar

〜んです (at the end of a sentence)
〜んです ends the sentence and gives an explanation: 頭が痛いんです (The thing is, I have a headache). 〜んですが does not end the message; it prepares the listener for what comes next: 頭が痛いんですが、薬はありませんか (I have a headache. Do you have any medicine?).
〜が、〜 (contrast / preface)
Plain 〜が after です/ます can show contrast (高いですが、おいしいです: It is expensive, but it is good) or a short fixed opener (すみませんが、…). 〜んですが adds the explaining tone of んです, so it is the usual choice when you describe your own situation before asking: 財布を忘れたんですが、お金を貸してもらえませんか.

§5How this shows up on the JLPT

In N4 grammar-form questions, 〜んですが often appears before どうしたらいいですか, 〜ていただけませんか, or 〜てもいいですか, and you choose the right form before it (なくしたんですが, 休みなんですが). In sentence-ordering questions, place んですが、 between the situation and the request. In listening, a line ending in 〜んですが…… means the speaker is asking for help even though no request is said.

§6Quick check (3 questions)

  • 1. Choose the form that fits the blank: 切符を__んですが、どうしたらいいですか。

    きっぷを__んですが、どうしたらいいですか。

  • 2. Which continuation is natural? 駅へ行きたいんですが、__。

    えきへいきたいんですが、__。

  • 3. In この本を借りたいんですが、いいですか, what does が do?

    このほんをかりたいんですが、いいですか
