〜たて

たて

freshly / just done

〜たて means that something has just been done, so it is still fresh or new. It is mostly used for food (焼きたて, 作りたて, 取れたて), for things that were just washed or painted (洗いたて, 塗りたて), and for people who have just started something (生まれたて, 入社したて, 覚えたて). It describes the fresh state of the thing or person, and it usually sounds positive for food.

焼きたてのパンは、とてもいいにおいがします。

やきたてのパンは、とてもいいにおいがします。

Freshly baked bread smells really good.

Structure

Verb ます-stem + たて (焼きます → 焼きたて, 生まれます → 生まれたて, 入社します → 入社したて). It works like a noun: before a noun, use たての + noun (焼きたてのパン); as a predicate, use たてだ / たてです; to continue a sentence, use たてで or たてなので. It is used with only a limited set of verbs.

Common mistakes

2
  • Using the た-form or the dictionary form before たて. ✗ 焼いたてのケーキ / ✗ 焼くたてのケーキ → ✓ 焼きたてのケーキ. たて follows the ます-stem: 焼きます → 焼き + たて.
  • Using たて with any verb, like たばかり. たて is used with only some verbs, mostly for things that are fresh or new. ✗ この映画は先週見たてです → ✓ この映画は先週見たばかりです. For most actions, use 〜たばかり.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜たばかり (have just done)
〜たばかり follows the た-form and can be used with almost any verb. It says that only a short time has passed since an action: 昼ご飯を食べたばかりだ (I have just eaten lunch). 〜たて follows the ます-stem, is used with only some verbs, and describes the fresh, new state of a thing or person: 作りたてのスープ (soup that has just been made, still hot).
〜たところだ (have just now done)
〜たところだ is about an action and its timing: someone has just now finished doing it. 今、クッキーを焼いたところです (I have just now finished baking cookies). 〜たて describes the thing itself and its fresh state: 焼きたてのクッキー (freshly baked cookies). So 焼きたて can be used for bread in a shop, where we do not talk about who baked it or when exactly.

How this shows up on the JLPT

At N3, 〜たて appears in grammar-form questions and in vocabulary, often as set words such as 焼きたて, できたて, 生まれたて and 入社したて. Check the ます-stem and the の before a noun. When a choice has たて, ask yourself whether the thing can be "fresh"; if the sentence is simply about a recent action, 〜たばかり is usually the answer.
