〜かける/〜かけの
かける/かけの
half-done / in the middle of / about to
〜かける means that an action has started but has not finished. It is often used when you stopped in the middle, or when something is left half-done: 読みかけの本 (a book I am partway through). With verbs of change, 〜かけている means that the change has already begun and is close to its end: 電池が切れかけている (the battery is almost dead). 〜かけの is the noun-like form used before a noun.
読みかけの本がテーブルの上にある。
よみかけのほんがテーブルのうえにある。
There is a book I'm halfway through on the table.
Structure
Verb ます-stem + かける (読みます → 読みかける, 言います → 言いかける). 〜かける is a Group II verb: 〜かけます / 〜かけた / 〜かけて / 〜かけている. Before a noun: ます-stem + かけの + noun (読みかけの本, 食べかけのパン). As a predicate: ます-stem + かけだ / かけです (この牛乳は飲みかけです).

Common mistakes

- Putting the dictionary form before かけ. ✗ 読むかけの本 → ✓ 読みかけの本. Use the ます-stem: 読みます → 読み + かけ.
- Forgetting の before a noun. ✗ 飲みかけジュース → ✓ 飲みかけのジュース. かけ works like a noun here, so it needs の to connect to the next noun.
- Thinking that 話しかける and 呼びかける always mean "start to talk / start to call". These are usually separate words: 話しかける means "speak to someone" (駅で知らない人に話しかけられた = A stranger spoke to me at the station), and 呼びかける means "call out to / appeal to".
How it's different from similar grammar
2
- 〜はじめる (start doing)
- 〜はじめる only tells that the action started, and it usually continues: 日記を書きはじめた (I started writing a diary). 〜かける puts the focus on the action being unfinished, often because it stopped in the middle: 日記を書きかけて、ペンを置いた (I started writing my diary, then put down my pen). If you want to say "left half-done", use 〜かけ, not 〜はじめ.
- 〜きる (do completely)
- 〜きる and 〜かける are opposites. 〜きる means the action went all the way to the end: 雑誌を最後まで読みきった (I read the magazine to the end). 〜かけ means it stopped partway: 読みかけの雑誌 (a magazine I'm partway through).
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar-form questions, look for a noun right after the blank: if there is one, the answer is usually 〜かけの (飲みかけのコーヒー). Check that the verb is in the ます-stem. In reading passages, 言いかけて or 〜かけていた often shows that someone stopped in the middle, which can be the key to what happened next.

Choose the word that fits the blank: 弟はやり__の宿題を置いたまま、遊びに行った。
