〜て以来

ていらい

ever since

A て以来、B means that the same situation B has continued all the time since A happened. A is an event at some distance in the past, not something from a few hours ago. B is not an action done only once, and the pattern is not used for the future. It sounds a little formal, and it is common in writing and in polite talk.

日本に来て以来、毎日日本語で日記を書いています。

にほんにきていらい、まいにちにほんごでにっきをかいています。

Ever since I came to Japan, I have been writing a diary in Japanese every day.

Structure

Verb て-form + 以来、 noun + 以来 (卒業以来, 入学以来, 結婚以来; also それ以来, あれ以来). No の is needed after the noun. The main clause is a state or habit that has continued from that time until now, so it often has ずっと, 〜ている, 〜ていない or 一度も〜ない.

Common mistakes

3
  • Putting a one-time action in the main clause. 日本に来て以来、富士山に登りました is wrong, because climbing once is not a situation that continues. Use てから for a single action: 日本に来てから、富士山に登りました. With 以来, say something that continues: 日本に来て以来、毎年富士山に登っています.
  • Using it for the very near past or for the future. 今朝起きて以来、何も食べていません sounds strange, because 以来 looks back over a longer time: say 今朝起きてから、何も食べていません. A future starting point is also wrong: 来月引っ越して以来 cannot be used.
  • Using the wrong form before 以来: 卒業した以来 and 卒業の以来 are wrong. A verb takes the て-form (卒業して以来), and a noun joins directly (卒業以来).

How it's different from similar grammar

1
てから (after / since)
てから is wider. It can be followed by a single action, it can be about the future, and the time can be short: 家に帰ってから、すぐ寝ました (I went to bed right after I got home). て以来 is used only when a state or habit has continued from a past event until now: 去年家を買って以来、外食をしなくなった (Ever since I bought a house last year, I have stopped eating out). In that kind of sentence てから is also correct, and 以来 sounds more formal.

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar questions, look at the main clause. If it has ずっと, 〜ている, 〜ていない or 一度も〜ない and the first half is a past event, て以来 is a strong candidate. Wrong choices often include a one-time action or a future plan. It is often tested with てから, てはじめて and たとたん. In reading passages, それ以来 at the start of a sentence means 'since then', so check what それ points to.
