〜をきっかけに

をきっかけに

Taking ... as an opportunity / triggered by

〜をきっかけに names an event that gave someone the chance or the push to start something new or to change. The second half usually says what began or changed: started studying, quit smoking, came to like something. The event before it is often one moment (an illness, a move, a meeting), and what follows is a new development.

日本のアニメを見たのをきっかけに、日本語を勉強し始めました。

にほんのアニメをみたのをきっかけに、にほんごをべんきょうしはじめました。

Watching Japanese anime got me started studying Japanese.

Structure

Noun + をきっかけに / をきっかけにして / をきっかけとして. Verb plain form + の or こと + をきっかけに (留学したのをきっかけに). A similar form: Noun + がきっかけで (その映画がきっかけで).

Common mistakes

3
  • Putting a verb directly before をきっかけに. ✗ 留学したをきっかけに → ✓ 留学したのをきっかけに / 留学をきっかけに. A verb needs の or こと first.
  • Mixing the two forms. ✗ 旅行がきっかけに / ✗ 旅行をきっかけで → ✓ 旅行をきっかけに / ✓ 旅行がきっかけで. Use を with に, and が with で.
  • Using をきっかけに for a simple cause of a one-time result. ✗ 雨をきっかけに、試合が中止になった → ✓ 雨のため、試合が中止になった. をきっかけに usually leads to a new start or a change that continues, not just a single result.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜ため (because of: cause)
ため gives a direct cause, often in formal notices: 大雪のため、電車が止まった (The trains stopped because of heavy snow). をきっかけに names the event that started a new action or change, often a personal one: 大雪をきっかけに、冬の準備を早めにするようになった (The heavy snow got me into the habit of preparing for winter early).
〜て以来 (ever since)
て以来 is about time: from that point until now, a state has continued: 日本に来て以来、ずっと東京に住んでいる (I have lived in Tokyo ever since I came to Japan). をきっかけに is about the push: the event is the reason a new thing began: 日本に来たのをきっかけに、料理を始めた (Coming to Japan got me started cooking).

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar-choice questions, をきっかけに is often mixed with をこめて, を通して and を中心に. Look at the second half: a new start or change (始める, やめる, 〜ようになる, 〜になった) is a strong hint. In sentence-ordering questions, check for の or こと between a verb and をきっかけに. In reading passages, 〜がきっかけで often explains how the writer's interest began.
