〜を通して/〜を通じて

をとおして/をつうじて

Through / via / throughout

〜を通して has two uses. First, 'through / via': something reaches you by way of a person, a medium, or an experience (I met my wife through a friend; I learned through my part-time job). Second, 'throughout': the same state continues for a whole period (warm all year round). を通じて has the same meaning and sounds a little more formal.

友人を通して、今の妻と知り合いました。

ゆうじんをとおして、いまのつまとしりあいました。

I met my wife through a friend.

Structure

Noun + を通して / を通じて. Before a noun: Noun + を通しての / を通じての + noun (スポーツを通しての交流). Meaning 1 (through): the noun is a person, a medium, or an experience. Meaning 2 (throughout): the noun is a length of time (一年, 一生).

Common mistakes

3
  • Using を通して for a simple tool. ✗ はさみを通して紙を切った → ✓ はさみで紙を切った. を通して is for a person, a medium (TV, the internet) or an experience that something passes through, not for a tool in your hand.
  • Using the wrong particle. ✗ 友だちに通して知り合った → ✓ 友だちを通して知り合った. The pattern always uses を.
  • Using the 'throughout' meaning for a point in time. ✗ 月曜日を通して会議がある → ✓ 月曜日に会議がある. For 'throughout', the noun must be a length of time (一年, 夏の間, 一生), and the same state continues for all of it.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
によって (by means of)
によって names the method used to get a result: 話し合いによって決めた (We decided by discussion). を通して names a person, medium, or experience that something passes through, often for meeting people, getting information, or learning: 仕事を通して多くのことを学んだ (I learned a lot through work). For 'I met him through a friend', use を通して, not によって.
〜間 (during / for the whole time)
間 is the basic way to say 'during': 夏休みの間、国に帰っていた (I was back home during the summer holidays). 一年を通して is used with long periods and stresses that the same state holds all through them, in every season: 一年を通して気温が高い (Temperatures are high all year round). Also, を通して always follows a noun, while 間 can also follow a verb (待っている間).

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar-choice questions, を通して is often mixed with によって, にとって and をきっかけに. Check the noun: a person or a medium (先輩, インターネット) or an experience (留学, アルバイト) points to 'through'; a period (一年, 一生) points to 'throughout'. In reading passages, sentences like 〜を通して学んだ often state the writer's main point.
