〜によって(手段・方法)
によって
By means of / through
〜によって shows the method or means used to do something: 'by discussion', 'through a survey'. It sounds more formal than で and is common in news, reports, and official notices. It is often used with verbs like 決める, 解決する, 集める and 連絡する, where a method leads to a result.

Common mistakes
3
- Using によって for simple everyday tools. ✗ はしによってご飯を食べる → ✓ はしでご飯を食べる. によって is formal and is usually used for a method that leads to a result (deciding, solving, collecting), not for ordinary tools in daily life.
- Using によって directly before a noun. ✗ メールによって申し込み → ✓ メールによる申し込み (an application by email). To modify a noun, use による.
- Confusing によって with によると (according to). ✗ ニュースによって、明日は雪だそうだ → ✓ ニュースによると、明日は雪だそうだ. によると gives the source of information and is usually followed by そうだ or らしい.

- で (by / with: means, tool)
- で is the basic, everyday particle for means and tools: バスで行く, ペンで書く, 日本語で話す. によって also shows a means, but it is formal and is used for methods that bring about a result, as in reports and notices: 会議の日にちは投票によって決めた (We decided the meeting date by vote). In daily conversation, で is much more common; for a pen or a bus, によって sounds strange.
- によって (because of: cause)
- The same によって can also show a cause. For a means, a person uses the method on purpose: 実験によってその考えが正しいと確かめた (We confirmed through an experiment that the idea was right). For a cause, the noun is usually an event that makes something happen by itself: 大雨によって道が通れなくなった (The road became closed because of heavy rain). Ask: did someone use it as a tool or method? Then it is the means use.
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar-choice questions, によって (means) is often mixed with によると, にとって and について; look for a method followed by a verb such as 決める or 解決する. You may also be asked to pick による before a noun. In reading passages, によって can mean means, cause, or 'depending on', so decide the meaning from the rest of the sentence.
