〜をはじめ(として)
をはじめ
Starting with / including
〜をはじめ gives one main or typical example first, and then talks about the whole group that includes it: 'the president and all the other staff', 'temples and many other old buildings'. The noun before it is usually the most important or best-known member of the group. It sounds a little formal and is common in speeches, news and writing.
この町には、お寺をはじめ、古い建物がたくさんあります。
このまちには、おてらをはじめ、ふるいたてものがたくさんあります。
This town has many old buildings, including temples.
Structure
Noun + をはじめ, + a larger group (みんな, たくさんの〜, 〜など, 〜も). Also Noun + をはじめとして (a little more formal). Before a noun: Noun + をはじめとする + noun (東京をはじめとする大きな町).

Common mistakes
3
- Using をはじめ for time order ('first..., then...'). ✗ 田中さんをはじめ話して、次に私が話した → ✓ 最初に田中さんが話して、次に私が話した. をはじめ does not mean 'first in time'; it names the main member of a group.
- Not mentioning the rest of the group. ✗ 父をはじめ、パーティーに来た → ✓ 父をはじめ、家族みんながパーティーに来た. After をはじめ, say who or what else is included (みんな, たくさんの〜, 〜など, 〜も).
- Using the wrong particle. ✗ 社長がはじめ、みんなが来た → ✓ 社長をはじめ、みんなが来た. The pattern always uses を.
How it's different from similar grammar
2
- 〜を中心に (centering on)
- をはじめ picks one main example and then includes the whole group: 北海道をはじめ、全国で雪が降った (It snowed all over the country, including Hokkaido). を中心に says where most of something is, or what the center is: 北海道を中心に雪が降った (It snowed, mainly in Hokkaido). With をはじめ the group is wide; with を中心に the focus is on the center.
- 〜など (and so on / such as)
- など simply gives examples and is used in any style: 肉や魚などを買った (I bought meat, fish and so on). をはじめ is more formal and puts one main example in front of the group: 肉をはじめ、いろいろな食べ物が安くなった (Many foods, starting with meat, became cheaper). The two are often used together: AをはじめB、Cなど.
How this shows up on the JLPT
In N3 grammar-choice questions, をはじめ often appears with を中心に, をこめて and を通して as the other choices. Look for a group word after the blank (みんな, 全員, たくさんの〜, 〜など). In sentence-ordering questions, remember the order Noun + をはじめ(として) + other members, and をはじめとする + noun. In reading passages and speeches, をはじめ often opens a list of people to thank.
Quick check (3 questions)
Choose the words that fit the blank: この大学には、ベトナム__、アジアの国々から多くの留学生が来ている。
