〜を中心に(して)

をちゅうしんに

Centering on / mainly

〜を中心に says that the noun is the center or the main part of something. It is used for places (shops are gathered around the station), for people (a group led by Linh), and for 'mainly' (popular mainly with young people; rain mainly in the Kanto area). Other things are also included, but the noun is the core.

駅を中心に、店やレストランが集まっています。

えきをちゅうしんに、みせやレストランがあつまっています。

Shops and restaurants are gathered around the station.

Structure

Noun + を中心に / を中心にして / を中心として. Before a noun: Noun + を中心とした / を中心にした + noun (リンさんを中心としたグループ).

Common mistakes

2
  • Using the wrong particle. ✗ 若い人の中心に人気がある → ✓ 若い人を中心に人気がある. The pattern uses を: Noun + を中心に.
  • Putting を中心に directly before a noun. ✗ 駅を中心に町 → ✓ 駅を中心とした町 / 駅を中心にした町 (a town built around the station). To modify a noun, use を中心とした or を中心にした.

How it's different from similar grammar

2
〜をはじめ (starting with / including)
を中心に focuses on the core: 若者を中心に広がった (It spread, mainly among young people). The main part is the young people. をはじめ names one main example and then includes the whole group: 若者をはじめ、多くの人に広がった (It spread to many people, starting with the young). Choose をはじめ when the sentence goes on to a wide group.
〜ばかり (only / nothing but)
を中心に means 'mainly', so other things are also there: 野菜を中心に食べている (I mainly eat vegetables, but also other food). ばかり means 'only, nothing but', often with a feeling of too much: 肉ばかり食べている (I eat nothing but meat). を中心に is neutral; ばかり often sounds like a complaint.

How this shows up on the JLPT

In N3 grammar-choice questions, を中心に is often mixed with をはじめ, をこめて and をきっかけに. Look for a word like 人気がある, 広がる, 集まる or a weather verb after the blank. In sentence-ordering questions, remember を中心とした / を中心にした + noun. In reading passages and weather reports, 〜を中心に often means 'mainly in (an area)'.
